4 Signs Kate Middleton And Prince William's Marriage Is Hanging On By A Thread

While it may be difficult to imagine a world in which Kate Middleton and Prince William aren't together, there have been signs over the years that maybe they're not living a fairytale after all. Even before the two tied the knot in April 2011, Middleton had doubts about being able to handle the pressure of dating William, so the Queen stepped in, ultimately saving the relationship. "[The Queen] could see [Kate] had all the qualities of a future Queen," Russell Myers, author of "William and Catherine, The Monarchy's New Era: The Inside Story," told People in February 2026. According to Myers, the Queen convinced William that faith in their relationship and love would be enough to get them through the tough times. However, that was 15 years ago.

Since then, strange things about Kate Middleton and Prince William's marriage keep popping up. Granted, no relationship is perfect and every one requires a lot of work from both partners, but sometimes even when everyone has done the work, there's no hope in a relationship being repaired. While that's all well and good, and people should be able to separate if it feels right, when it comes to the royal family and the world stage on which it plays out, things can get complicated and dramatic real fast. From William never wearing his wedding ring — an alleged personal preference — to rumors he's been unfaithful, more than a few details suggest their marriage is hanging on by thread.

Not only does it appear that Kate Middleton, whose life was forever changed the moment she married into the royal family, and Prince William are headed for divorce, but some sources say that they've already separated and have been living apart for sometime now. In January 2026, a video on X fed into the speculation that Kate and William were living in different locations as Charlotte and George arrived at Kensington Palace, via helicopter, holding what appeared to be overnight bags. Naturally, an insider denied this, but did share that the couple was facing some challenges. For example, Kate is still in remission from cancer, so that must be weighing heavily on the family and, of course, it's no easy feat raising three small children so close in age. 

As if to contradict the rumors and show how deliriously happy they are together, Kate and William hit up the Charing Cross Hospital in London on January 8, 2026, just two days after the video was posted on X. While their visit may have been an innocent one with no ulterior motive, as Kate and William are no strangers to visiting hospitals, their smiles were very telling. As research has found, there are many ways to smile and not all of them are genuine or even remotely linked to authentic joy. After all, the phrase, "fake it, 'til you make it," exists for a reason.

Just one day after their trip to Charing Cross Hospital, on January 9, Kate Middleton turned 44 years old. While not exactly a milestone age, like 40 or 50, Prince William failed to acknowledge it on social media. Although we shouldn't use social media as a measurement of one's love for the partner, because of the culture in which we're living, that's where we are. However, the official account of the Royal Family on X, did wish Kate a happy birthday along with a stunning photo of the Princess of Wales.

What leads to even more questions is that the shared Instagram account of Kate and William, @princeandprincessofwales, posted a video on Kate's birthday about The Mother Nature series and its impact on Kate's healing process. Nothing was posted again on the account until five days later when a video was uploaded of William during the 2026 British investiture, in which ceremonies are held to award individuals for their various contributions. Again, social media shouldn't be an indicator of one's marital happiness, but that's how things are now, so for William to not post anything about Kate on her birthday just throws more fuel on the fire of their relationship being in turmoil. But if Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are among the celebrities who have laughed off divorce rumors, maybe Kate and William can learn to do the same. 

While Prince William doesn't wear a wedding band because it's, allegedly, not his style, the same can't be said for Kate Middleton. Unlike her husband, Middleton appears to love jewelry and often wears a fair amount of it — but in that sophisticated, royal sort of way. However, when the couple visited the Charing Cross Hospital in January 2026, Middleton was without her engagement ring.

Although there may be a protocol about not wearing excessive jewelry in a hospital, when she visited the Colchester Hospital in Essex in July 2025, she was sporting her engagement ring, in addition to her wedding band and other pieces of jewelry. Middleton had gone to the hospital's garden, a safe space that was built to help those in their recovery process, where she took time to talk to patients and share her own healing journey while in cancer remission. "You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment," Middleton told the patients, via People. "Treatment's done, then it's like, 'I can crack on, get back to normal,' but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult."

Perhaps, Middleton not wearing her iconic sapphire engagement ring in January 2026 simply came down to preference, but considering the rumors swirling around her and William, it's interesting that she'd skip wearing her ring.

Being in the public eye is a lot of work, especially as a royal. To no surprise, a representative of Kensington Palace explained, via Marie Claire, "Liza is joining in a non-crisis-based role in the KP press office."

It's also worth noting that in April 2025, William hired the same divorce lawyers who represented his mother, Princess Diana, when she split from Prince Charles. "William wanted to strike out on his own. He did not want to continue using his father's lawyers," a source told the Daily Mail. "It's as simple as that." However, if you're not considering divorce, it seems strange to hire a law firm that specializes in exactly that.
