ABC's "The Middle" served up multiple sweet love stories during its nine-season run. From Frankie Heck (Patricia Heaton) and Mike Heck (Neil Flynn) dealing with the relatable realities of romance after multiple years of marriage, to Sue Heck (Eden Sher) and Sean Donahue (Beau Wirick)'s long-time coming love, the sitcom never shied away from a romance plot. Off-screen though, its leading ladies have relationships that are just as heartwarming.
Heaton has been married to her husband since 1990, while Sher tied the knot in a pandemic wedding. Then there's the unexpected romance that started on the set, as Daniela Bobadilla — who fans will recognize as Sue's best friend and college roommate Lexie Brooks – found real-life love with Wirick (yep, Lexie and Sean are a thing IRL!). Then there's one of Axl Heck's most notable exes who's totally loved up with a famous popstar.
Patricia Heaton found her Mike Heck in David Hunt
Patricia Heaton tied the knot with fellow actor and director David Hunt in 1990 after they met when he was her landlord. "I'd call her to discuss the phone bill or some such nonsense, but I ended up reading her Yeats over the phone. When she didn't hang up, I figured there was a crack in the door," he joked during a joint interview with Today's Christian Woman. The couple have welcomed four sons (Samuel, John, Joseph, and Daniel) since then, and Heaton has shared a few glimpses at their marriage over their decades together, including sharing photos and videos from their vacation to Italy on Instagram in 2025.
Their relationship transcends the romantic though, as Heaton and Hunt are also business partners. The long-term couple own a production company, FourBoys (which was named for their four children), through which they share their Christian faith. "We want to contribute something to culture that's truthful but is grounded in hope, the hope that we have through our faith, that God is in control, and that all things work to the good of those who love the Lord," Heaton told The Christian Post of the joint venture. The two also launched Solubrae, a non-alcoholic wine brand, in 2026.
The star, who's one half of one of TV's best sitcom couples, also shared how therapy improved both their lives on "The Real" in 2016. "You have to do marriage counseling," she said. "You can't live with the same person for that long and not get frustrated or bored or angry or whatever, and you have to learn how to talk to each other."
Eden Sher had a Covid-19 wedding with Nick Cron-DeVico
Eden Sher is loved up with her husband Nick Cron-DeVico. The two got engaged in 2019, with Sher announcing the happy news alongside a carousel of Instagram images. "It's been more than 4 years, we've been to 4 countries, lived in 2 houses, have 2 dogs, been REAL BORED in 12 airports, gotten fancy 100+ times, taken 58 photo booths, have collectively 1 Emmy, and now @nickcrondevico and I get to spend THE REST OF ETERNITY DOING MORE OF ALL OF IT. V EXCITING NEWS GUYS: WE ENGAGED AS F******CK!!!!!!!" she wrote. The two got married the following year, with Sher sharing photos from their Covid wedding (complete with face masks) on Instagram.
The two went on to welcome twins, with Sher telling Chortle of their tough early years as parents, "I gave birth to twins at 28 weeks during a pandemic and then had to keep two new-born infants alive during a pandemic." In an adorable Instagram post celebrating Cron-DeVico's birthday and Father's Day in 2024, the actor described her husband as "the f**king best dad & best partner, without whom everyone in my house would starve," alongside sweet snaps of them with their twins. Sher confirmed on her "Middling with Eden and Brock" podcast in October 2025 that she was expecting again, joking she was pregnant with "a singleton" following their multiples.
Brooke Shields married Chris Henchy (despite initially breaking up with him) in 2001
Brooke Shields appeared in multiple episodes of "The Middle" as Rita Glossner, the Heck family's unruly neighbor with multiple kids. But the actor is much more polished than her character and found love with writer and producer Chris Henchy. Shields has been open about the rocky early days of their romance, admitting she broke up with him because she wanted to date other people. "I was calling him all the time, and he said, 'You broke up with me, this is the way it works. You don't get to call me every day, because you broke up with me. So don't call me every day,'" she told People, revealing she soon realized Henchy was the one for her. "I don't want to lose this person, so I better behave," she recalled thinking, and the two got back together.
They opted for a wedding that wasn't a total spectacle in 2001, surprising the world (and even Shields' rep). "She just went off and got married. I don't have much more information than that," her rep told ABC News. The twosome have been more open about their relationship since then though. In 2024, Shields shared wedding photos on Instagram (alongside a few more recent snaps), writing, "Today marks 23 years married to the love of my life [white heart emoji] still giddy to be stuck with you, Henchy!" Shields and Henchy are parents to two daughters, Rowan and Grier, and "The Middle" star has shared some astute relationship advice. "Always have forgiveness in your heart, but make sure that you communicate about it," she told Us Weekly.
Alexa PenaVega's husband is Big Time Rush star Carlos PenaVega
Alexa PenaVega appeared in "The Middle" as Axl Heck's girlfriend Morgan Edwards, but she had her heart stolen by a boyband star in real-life. Alexa and Big Time Rush star Carlos PenaVega married in 2014, and they've worked together on multiple occasions since. The two shared a glimpse into their family life via their YouTube page La Vida PenaVega, competed alongside one another on Season 21 of "Dancing with the Stars," and acted in the Hallmark holiday movie "Enchanted Christmas." "It's the best!!! You usually hear of most married people not wanting to work together but we absolutely love it!" Carlos PenaVega told All Mom Does of working with his love. Despite the PenaVega's marriage having a few red flags, the two also wrote a book about their relationship and shared faith, titled "What If Love Is the Point?: Living for Jesus in a Self-Consumed World."
Alexa and Carlos PenaVega are proud parents too. They share Ocean, Kingston, and Rio, but sadly experienced the stillbirth of their fourth child in 2024. They've also turned their backs on Hollywood and moved their family to Hawaii for a quieter life. "We'd always talked about moving to Hawaii, but later on in life, like a retirement plan. But we also knew that we didn't want to raise our kids in Los Angeles," Alexa PenaVega told Fox News. "I felt this tug in my heart. I felt it was God going, 'You guys need to get out of here. It's time,'" she added.
Daniela Bobadilla married her co-star Beau Wirick
On "The Middle," Daniela Bobadilla's character Lexie Brooks ended up with Axl Heck. In real life though, she married another actor from the show — Beau Wirick. Their co-star Jen Ray (aka Nancy Donohue, Sean Donohue's mom) announced the news on Instagram in 2018 via a screenshot from a Facetime with the happy couple which showed Bobadilla proudly flashing her engagement ring. "I can FINALLY shout it from the rooftops! My dear friends Beau & Daniela got married tonight! Here is the day they FaceTimed me to share the news & then sharing it with our whole 'Middle' family!" she wrote.
In a post on his own grid, Wirick shared he first asked Bobadilla out in 2017 and confirmed their first date lasted 10 hours. "When you find 'The One,' you want to spend all of your time and money trying to make them happy. My wife is content with the simplest things, but I still LOVE spending money on her. I can't help it!" he wrote alongside a selfie of the two of them overlooking a beach.
"The Middle" isn't the only project this happy couple has worked on together though. In 2023, they appeared in the TV movie "The Happy Camper," with Bobadilla telling her husband via Instagram on the first day of shooting, "It still doesn't feel real that we get to act together again but here we are! I can't wait to fall in love with you all over again." That same year, they opened up about their relationship during a Couchside Conversations chat as part of Morton Wealth's 2023 Investor Symposium (Wirick is director of financial planning at Morton Wealth).
