Gracie Abrams' Transformation Has Been A Sight To See

When you hear Gracie Abrams' name, you immediately lump her in with the best-dressed nepo babies in Hollywood, but being the daughter of a big-deal filmmaker isn't the only thing she's known for. Born to J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath, she got her start in the music industry at 19 when she signed with Interscope Records, and she's since been creating hits like "I Love You, I'm Sorry" and "That's So True." Don't assume all her success comes because of her family, however. "I love them, but I definitely would also love to be able to not be associated with what they do for work when it comes to what I do for work," she told Clash.

Abrams has indeed risen in the ranks of the music world using her talents and has even opened for Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo. And, along with her career transformation, the singer's fashion has evolved as well, becoming known for her laid-back street style and glamorous red carpet looks. From creating music in her room to becoming a sartorial icon touring the country, Abrams' rise as a pop star is quite the sight to behold.

2020: Gracie Abrams rocked an indie-chic look amid the release of her first album

Gracie Abrams was just 20 years old when she debuted her EP, "Minor," featuring seven songs centered on love, heartbreak, and all the angsty musings of a young woman. The singer-songwriter's lyrics reflect all the feelings she has gone through, with her heavily involved in the creative process since the beginning of her career. When asked if she writes lyrics meant for songs or just turns works she's already had, such as poems, into music, Abrams told Coup de Main, "They're kind of always specifically for songs, but I'll pull from journal entries when I want to. I just see the two kind of existing separately. I go to my journal when I need to, and I write a song when I need to."

As a burgeoning musician, Abrams began making the rounds at industry events and showed up to Spotify's Best New Artist shindig in Los Angeles wearing a boho floral dress, the once-popular fashion trend from the 1970s. Her style was cool and casual, with a vintage feel that was purposefully worn with comfort in mind. "Since my year in New York, I've been going for clothes that help me feel comfortable and happy. What matters to me in fashion is how it makes me feel, more than the visual effect," Abrams shared with L'Officiel. Adding to her effortless look was minimal makeup (because a full beat isn't for everyone). Not that she needed much at all — we need to know her skincare routine, stat.

2021: Gracie Abrams had fun with her 'fits while promoting her new music

Showing that her hard work and talent paid off, Gracie Abrams announced her very first tour, "I've missed you, I'm sorry," on Instagram in July 2021. The dates included performances in various California and Texas cities, with one showing in London. Despite becoming such a huge star, Abrams still kept her aesthetic completely low-key, even showing up to the Austin City Limits Music Festival in a white bucket hat and t-shirt.

Following the tour, Abrams released her second EP, "This Is What It Feels Like," with the song "Rockland" gaining the attention of Taylor Swift. "It truly means so much to me and to so many young writers and artists, having grown up with her music. Like, I think that she is, for me, one of the blueprints for vulnerability as a young woman," Abrams gushed to Teen Vogue. The music-making process is a sort of therapy for her, as she described, "In terms of my anxieties and my intrusive thoughts that I've written about in 'This is What it Feels Like,' I feel like it is more of a deep dive a bit." Abrams added, "I think that I'll continue to feel like whatever I'm making in the present moment is an even more accurate representation, a more accurate introduction, which is kind of just funny to be learning that, because I'm very new to this."

2023: Gracie Abrams started delving more into fashion

You know you've made it big when you get invited to a huge fashion show. In 2023, Gracie Abrams attended the Saint Laurent Menswear show during Paris Fashion Week, wearing a dramatically long leather coat. The 'fit was quite a departure from her usual casual clothes, and she told Net-a-Porter that year, "I feel very new to fashion, but it's become an extension of the music in a way. I've struggled in the past trying on clothes and not necessarily feeling like myself in them. Now, I'm more intentional in how I dress; I love wearing tones and color palettes that are in line with how the album makes me feel."

The album that Abrams is seemingly referring to is "Good Riddance," her first full-length record that she released in February 2023. The songs are not just about leaving behind a failed relationship, but also the toxic traits that she shed. "While making the album, so much changed. A lot shifted. I felt like I was just leaving behind these versions of myself that I didn't recognize or didn't like very much. And I think while writing this album, it was kind of the first place that I was admitting to a lot of these feelings at all," Abrams said on her YouTube channel. The following May, she kicked off her new tour, baring her heart on the stage, which was no-frills, except for the band, a few instruments, and a mic, which perfectly represented the "Full machine" singer's indie aesthetic.

2025: Gracie Abrams has perfected her signature look

Gracie Abrams may have stepped up her fashion game, but she's still committing to the girl-next-door look when it comes to her hair and makeup. "I tend to feel the most beautiful when I have the least on my face and when I feel the most like myself," she told Harper's Bazaar in a July 2025 interview. Referring to her signature bob, Abrams spilled that it was spurred by a hard time in a relationship, but she's since kept her hair short. Although she admitted to getting hair envy at times, the "Friend" singer shared, "I miss it sometimes, but I think overall, I feel way more like myself and in my skin with this hair."

Abrams continued to thrive in her music career, having released her second album, "The Secret of Us," in 2024, and then consequently toured the following year. Just like any creative genius, she was met with a bout of doubt and writer's block after the success of her new record. "'That's So True' was the first song I've had that did what it did. Every time I sat down to try to write something, I felt a little sick. I was thinking, like, 'How do I do something that will beat it?'" she shared with Billboard. Still, that didn't deter Abrams, and she's continuing to make music that is authentic to herself. "I think the best use of me as a human being on this planet, at least right now, is trying to use my writing or storytelling to make as many people as possible feel connected to themselves and to this community," she declared.
