Pics Of Kelly And Mike Johnson That Paint An Awkward Portrait Of Their Marriage
Although there are more than a few photos that shine a spotlight on the strangeness of Melania and Donald Trump's marriage, they're not the only ones in the White House with an odd looking relationship. Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, and his wife, Kelly Johnson, have also been pictured together looking more like strangers than partners. Which is fairly interesting considering these two are in a covenant marriage, meaning divorce is only allowed if there's a dire situation, like abuse or a felony has been committed. Covenant marriages are currently only available in three U.S. states: Louisiana, Arizona, and Arkansas.
"From a woman's perspective, I've been in some bad relationships before, and I just knew that when I met the man that I was supposed to marry, I wanted to know it was for a lifetime," Kelly Johnson told Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America" in 2001, via People. While it's great that some people are willing to take their vows so seriously that they legit mean until death do them part, there are of course some downsides, too, such as potentially being stuck in an unhappy marriage.
As much as it's true that no one knows the intricacies of someone else's marriage or what goes on behind closed doors, sometimes photos speak volumes. And, from what we can tell, Kelly and Mike Johnson don't appear to be 100% comfortable with each other. Or maybe that's just how they roll in public.
Proving the awkward photos started early
Because covenant marriages are so strict, even if you grow to hate your partner, you can't easily get out of the relationship. That being said, it would make sense that a couple who have been together for a long time might come across awkward in some pictures. However, as evidenced by this photo Mike Johnson posted on Instagram in May 2025, marking his 26th wedding anniversary, it's clear these two have always been a little strange in their interactions with each other. From Mike Johnson's hand on his wife's stomach, to her hand against her chest, towards her shoulder, instead of around him, a kinesics expert would have a field day.
Giving off major first date energy
Despite having been married since May 1999, in this photo that Mike Johnson posted on Instagram of he and Kelly Johnson on July 4, 2025, celebrating Independence Day, the two look like they're on a first date. Granted, no one is asking for an awkward celebrity PDA moment that we wish we didn't have to see, but these two are keeping a distance that strangers who are seated next to each other against their will tend to keep. Even if Kelly Johnson had placed her hand on her husband's arm, it would have showed that they at least know each other.
Mike Johnson may have forgotten that Kelly was on Air Force One too
Naturally, when there are many people in a small space trying to fit in a photo, some need to take the back row. But there's something about this photo that Mike Johnson posted on Instagram in September 2025, that almost suggests he's completely forgotten Kelly Johnson was also on board Air Force One, hence the reason he's in front of her as she tries to be included. It's also worth noting that Mike Johnson's right hand is tucked into his pocket, when he easily could have reached back to his wife, making her feel like she's part of the group.
Looking like they're about to join the Dinner Party episode of The Office
In January 2025, Mike Johnson posted this photo on Instagram of himself, his wife Kelly Johnson, and Usha and JD Vance at a dinner party hosted by the Vances. While Usha and JD Vance have their own marital red flags we can't ignore, the fact that the Vances look far more at ease than the Johnsons is really saying something. While we have no idea what went on at dinner that night, it's fun to picture it unraveling like the "Dinner Party" episode of "The Office," where there's not even a moment's break from the awkwardness.
Practicing their Madame Tussauds poses
Just two months before Donald Trump was elected president of the US in November 2024, Kelly and Mike Johnson took this photo with him in Mar-a-Lago – and you can slice the awkwardness in the room with a knife if you wanted to. Instead of looking like cozy MAGA buddies, the Johnsons look like they showed up for a meet-and-greet with Trump and were told how to pose for the photo. There's absolutely nothing natural about this picture, and there seems to be a fear that if any of them were to touch each other, they all might spontaneously combust on impact.
Seeming grateful that Erika Kirk is in-between them
Since the death of her husband Charlie Kirk in September 2025, Erika Kirk has been making the rounds and doing so in outfits that have more shine than a disco ball. In January 2026, as Mike Johnson shared on his Instagram, he and his wife, Kelly Johnson, hosted Kirk at the Capitol. While Kirk's smile looks genuine, the same can't be said for the Johnsons. Instead, their smiles appear forced, like they don't want to be there, but are grateful there's someone standing between them. Kelly Johnson, in particular, is giving "I'm a hostage" vibes with her facial expression.
Kelly Johnson looking a hostage (again)
As Stephen Colbert pointed out on "The Late Show" in November 2023, Kelly Johnson really is just as weird as her husband, Mike Johnson. Colbert cited Kelly Johnson's work with the Onward Christian Counseling Service, which promotes some unusual views. This photo from the Army-Navy game in September 2024 shows Kelly Johnson in a peculiar way, too. Mike Johnson is at least looking at the camera, but Kelly Johnson, again, looks like she's being held hostage, while Donald Trump is, well, Donald Trump. Mike and Kelly Johnson's son, Jack, seems to be the only one trying to pull this motley crew together for a proper photo.
Grateful for another stand in
In May 2025, Kelly and Mike Johnson — as well as their family – posed with country singer Lainey Wilson, as Johnson congratulated Wilson on winning Entertainer of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in his Instagram caption. In a move that's quite stunning, based on so many other photos of Kelly and Mike Johnson, the two of them aren't just touching Wilson, something that they don't even do with each other, but it appears they both have their arm wrapped around her too. Which begs the question: Why can they show affection with a famous singer in public, but not each other?
When the local Stepford family tries to comes off approachable
Perhaps, in an attempt to seem less like replicants – a bioengineered humanoid that only looks human — Kelly and Mike Johnson created a video in December 2024 that the latter posted on his Instagram. But even in a video about Christmas, these two feel like they're lightyears apart. There's no affectionate interaction, nothing that resembles any real human emotion or feelings, and Mike Johnson looks like the cat that swallowed the canary, as he tends to do. Simply, they both come off cold and like they're pretending to be human or, at the very least, relatable to human beings.
