There was a time pre-social media when we rarely saw our favorite celebrities without makeup, but it's not uncommon anymore for celebs to give the world a glimpse at their bare faces. Just ask Taylor Swift, who's had multiple gorgeous no makeup moments, or Ariana Grande, who has some stunning snaps sans cosmetics. But while there are multiple stars who have proudly gone makeup-free for the whole world to see, there are others we very rarely, if ever, see in their most natural state.

Though we wouldn't recommend sleeping in makeup (trust us, it's just not worth it), country music icon Dolly Parton has admitted she regularly does so she can wake up looking glam in an emergency. Then there's actor Priscilla Presley, who always wears cosmetics to keep an air of mystery. But they're not the only ones who refuse to be seen without a stint in the makeup chair.

1. Priscilla Presley never let her ex-husband Elvis Presley see her without makeup

Priscilla Presley has had a head-turning transformation, which includes years of heavy makeup. Speaking on "Loose Women" in 2016, she admitted she never let her late ex-husband, Elvis Presley, see her without it, explaining (via Yahoo! Life), "He taught me, even in having a relationship, about always having a mystique — never revealing everything. There are things you keep to yourself. Some can't have the truth. I always had a little bit of makeup."

Jo Ann MacNeil, who oversaw the makeup department on "Priscilla" (the movie based on Priscilla's book "Elvis and Me"), later elaborated on why Priscilla likes to be gussied up. "[Elvis] thought she looked plain without makeup," MacNiel told Time. "She never presented herself to him without makeup on. If she was in a little bit of makeup when she came down and he saw her and thought it wasn't enough, he would send her back upstairs to put more on."

Though Priscilla was forever changed by her divorce from Elvis, it seems her attitude toward being makeup-free never wavered. The actor often appears on social media fully done up during even her most casual moments, like in 2025 when an Instagram snap showed her wearing the likes of eyeshadow, foundation, and lipstick while home with her dog.

2. Dolly Parton goes to bed wearing makeup

Dolly Parton's love of makeup is no secret. The star has spoken about her passion for cosmetics on multiple occasions (she even launched her own makeup line, Dolly Beauty, in 2024), and she's also gotten candid about making sure she's made up at all hours of the day — and night. "I never go out with a bare face. Not even when I go out. Somebody, please open my coffin to put some makeup on me. At night, I leave my makeup on," she told Allure in 2021, joking she wants to be ready to go at night in case of any emergencies. "You're not gonna catch me out in the streets bare-faced unless you've caught me in the morning when I'm cleaning my face and getting ready to put it on again," she said.

The "Coat of Many Colors" singer clarified in another Allure interview the following year that she doesn't specifically put makeup on to go to bed, but doesn't take off what she's been wearing that day. "I like to look pretty for my husband. I don't want to go to bed with the rollers and the Clearasil and all kinds of stuff stuck on my face and then get cleaned up and leave the next day so everybody else could see me [looking] pretty, but he sleeps with a hag!" she said, referring to her late husband Carl Dean.

3. Charlotte Tilbury made a vow to never let her bare face been seen

Charlotte Tilbury often wearing makeup isn't a surprise considering her eponymous makeup line is hugely successful and beloved by her fellow celebs including Sydney Sweeney and Lisa Rinna. What is surprising though is her dedication to never being spotted without it. Tilbury recalled discovering makeup on a trip when she was 13 years old, which she felt made her more popular when she returned home. "It was like, 'Oh my god.' This is the power of makeup. It made a massive difference on my face. After that, I never wanted to be seen without makeup ever again. And I made that pact, from that day onwards: I sleep in my makeup," she told Into The Gloss.

"At night, I take everything off my face and moisturize — because you have to let your skin breathe a bit — but then I put everything right back on again: a little under-eye brightener [...] then the eye goes back on, and maybe a little tint on the cheeks," she said. Tilbury, who admitted she only sleeps without makeup when she's alone, also told The Cut that she applies eyeliner and mascara on her top lashes to go to bed. The makeup mogul, who said her husband has never seen her without at least a little makeup, added to Into The Gloss, "My mother said to me, 'You always have to keep the mystery alive...'"

Even Kim Kardashian is impressed by Tilbury's determination to never be seen bared-faced. "Charlotte Tilbury is my hero because she has never let her husband see her without makeup on. She sleeps with her makeup on. She's my idol," the reality star told The Cut.

4. Scarlett Johansson always wears makeup to avoid feeling underdressed

Scarlett Johansson told Vanity Fair she started wearing makeup when she was around 8 years old (around the time she started acting), which may explain her penchant for always being made up. "I always like to put a little bit of makeup on. I'm not the kind of person that just slops around in sweatpants," she told Style in 2011 (via Daily Mail). "I like to feel a little more together — you never know who you're going to see out there!" she added, noting red lipstick is her go-to cosmetic. "I always keep red lipstick in my bag because I never know when I might show up to an event and be completely under-dressed. I feel like red lipstick is the cure-all for everything," she said.

In the years since Johansson made those remarks, though, it seems the "Black Widow" star has let up a little on the constant heavy makeup. But that doesn't mean she's embraced life without it on a regular basis as even when she's rocking a more natural look, she's probably still wearing light cosmetics. "My look is very minimal and clean. I'm never glammed up. If I'm going out to meet friends or something, or going on a date with my husband, then I really love to put makeup on and stuff like that. But day to day, I don't wear full coverage foundation," she told Marie Claire in 2023.

5. Carrie Underwood is a glam girl every day

Carrie Underwood has made some makeup mistakes, but the odds were against her considering she wears it every single day. The "American Idol" winner turned judge has been open about why she never skips cosmetics, telling People in 2015, "I'll always put makeup on, even if it's just a little bit [...] I'll always put on a little eyeshadow, a little liner and mascara and I'm good to go." As for why she rarely, if ever, has a makeup-free day, she said, "If I'm going someplace, I always think, 'Somebody's going to see me and want to take a picture with me,' which is really great, but I hate it when I see the pictures later when I wasn't wearing any makeup at all."

The star shared a similar sentiment with Yahoo! Life two years later, explaining she's likely wearing light cosmetics even when it looks like she isn't. "I always wear makeup. Even if I've got five minutes, I will make it work, make it happen. It doesn't take a whole lot to make me feel a little better," the "Church Bells" hitmaker said. Underwood, who was even wearing full makeup in a 2026 Instagram photo showing her holding a chicken, also delved a little deeper into why she prefers being made up to au naturel. "I had teenage sisters when I was little. I would always watch them. I was a human Barbie doll. I started loving makeup when I was way too young," she said.
