Michelle Obama's Striking Beauty Transformation Has Been Incredible To See

Michelle Obama has spoken about how leaving the White House gave her the freedom to experiment more with her hair and wardrobe. In her coffee-table book "The Look", Obama revealed that when she was first lady, every aspect of her appearance was under the microscope of the public and the press. From her fashion choices and ancestry, to her biceps and her hair, people always had something to say about what the very first African American first lady should look like. Obama has since been able to move away from the stigma around Black women dressing a certain way.

Lately, the former first lady has had quite the style evolution since leaving the White House, trading in her straightened hair and floral dresses for a trendier wardrobe, boss-lady suits, and braids. During one of her first appearances without the "first lady" title in 2018, Obama showed up to her Becoming: An Intimate Conversation with Michelle Obama book tour clad in a white tailored pantsuit. In 2019, she rocked up to the Essence Festival wearing her hair naturally for the first time in years. In 2022, Obama decided it was finally time to experiment with makeup and brave the braids. And in 2024, the former first lady showcased her newfound passion for fashion by walking out on the The Jennifer Hudson Show in thigh-high black leather boots.

Michelle Obama's hair became a political issue, so she straightened it for 8 years

Obama made history when she became the first Black woman to hold such a prestigious title, and so did her first official portrait. Obama said that her curly hair and overall look were dubbed "un-first-lady-like". "As first lady, you're put on a de facto pedestal because the role has historically carried so much ceremonial significance, representing the notion of womanhood itself, of femininity and the spousal ideal," she wrote (via The Guardian). Throughout her two terms in the White House, Obama said that she opted for straightened hair to avoid the constant criticism.

This isn't the first time Obama has addressed styling her hair as the first African American first lady. Amid her 2022 book tour for her memoir, "The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times," Obama told television host Ellen DeGeneres that the stigma was just part of the "African American experience" (via The Washington Post). Maryland council member Jolene Ivey spoke to NPR about how women of color in politics are pressured to fit "a certain kind of aesthetic" with their appearance. "White beauty is the standard of beauty," she said. The politician went on to name former Vice President Kamala Harris as another woman of color in the political sphere who has been criticised for her appearance, and questioned why race and beauty have anything to do with being a good fit for the job.

Michelle Obama now embraces her natural hair and hasn't stopped wearing braids since 2022

In 2019, Obama attended the Essence Festival with her natural hair on full display. During the interview, the former first lady rocked a blue sequined jumpsuit and a brown-to-blonde ombre hair style. A year later, Obama again appeared on stage with her natural hair loose. But this time, as a special guest on Oprah Winfrey's 2020 Vision tour in New York, her locks were dyed jet back.

Obama's hair made headlines when she wore braids to the unveiling of her first-lady portrait in September 2022. The former first lady told People that she "understood the significance of wearing braids" to the event and hasn't stopped wearing them since. Obama again stepped out in braids during her "The Light We Carry" book tour. Clad in studded boots and a leather jacket, she sat on stage at the Fox Theatre with confidence. While the hairstyle was new for her fans, Obama's relationship with braids dates way back to her childhood on the south side of Chicago. "I wanted to send a message, add to the discourse of Black women in places of power, saying, 'This too is an appropriate and beautiful way to wear your hair'," Obama later explained to People. In a 2026 appearance, watching an NBA All-Star game with her husband Barack Obama, she once again showcased soft braids and tight curls.

Michelle Obama has started to experiment with makeup

As well as wearing more daring outfits, Obama has also been more experimental with her makeup. As per her memoir, which explores the power of change, during the"The Light We Carry," book tour in 2022, Obama showcased her newfound fun with makeup. On one occasion, the former first lady showed up to the event wearing smoky gold eyeshadow, gray eyeliner, and a heavy layer of black mascara. The then 58-year-old finished off the look by adding some chunky silver earrings. On another occasion, Obama wore silver eyeshadow, topped with black winged eyeliner and bold gold earrings. The glamorous decoration is a complete contrast to the natural look that dominated her White House years.

In the introduction of the book, Michelle introduces readers to her new passion for embracing change and becoming confident in the face of vulnerability. "We become bolder in brightness. If you know your light, you know yourself," she wrote. "You know your own story in an honest way. In my experience, this type of self-knowledge builds confidence," Obama added, encouraging others to embrace who they are. The memoir was well-received by readers, with one person writing on Good Reads: "I was inspired, reassured and soothed every time I opened this book."

Michelle Obama has traded floral dresses and sleeveless frocks for designer labels instead

Floral and sleeveless sheath dresses seemed to be the go-to option for the former first lady, and it's fair to say she rocked quite a few throughout her time in the White House. But in her new book, Obama wrote about how these botanic looks didn't come without criticism. In 2009, America couldn't quite believe that their first Black presidential spouse had opted for a short-sleeve dress and Obama's toned biceps garnered much attention. One New York Times article, headlined "Michelle Obama Goes Sleeveless, Again," wrote, "It's her arms that pop out, rippled and gleaming." Tabloids even coined the term "Sleevegate" to discuss the matter.

Jump to her years outside of the White House, and Obama has ditched the floral patterns and embraced a more trendy wardrobe instead. The former presidential spouse has been spotted wearing an array of designer labels, featuring Jimmy Choo, Balenciaga, and a Bottega Veneta dress that put her killer legs on display. In addition to her other showstopping fashion choices, Obama turned up to one show in 2022 wearing a Ganni double denim co-ord and red heeled boots from Balenciaga. The former first lady emphasized her new freedom to experiment with fashion again when she walked out on the The Jennifer Hudson Show in 2024 wearing a slinky Bottega Veneta dress and thigh-high leather Jimmy Choo boots, topped with an oversized black blazer.

Michelle Obama and her newfound love for tailored suits

Obama's fashion and beauty freedom outside of the White House is evident and she has clearly had a wardrobe rebrand. But while she has taken to some more trendy and experimental outfits, when she does mean business, Obama is often seen wearing a tailored pantsuit. During her many high-profile and political appearances, the former first lady has predominantly worn suits – designer suits to be precise. On the second day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in 2024, Obama showcased her toned biceps with confidence by wearing a waistcoat by Monse, fitted suit trousers, and a pair of black pointed stilettos. Again in 2024, for one of Kamala Harris' campaigns in Michigan, Obama chose a speckled orange-and-black tailored Theory suit.

Obama went on to showcase her transformation on the cover of People magazine in November 2025. "I think I've become more confident about who I am. This version of Michelle probably cares less about what other people think," she told People. In the exclusive interview, the former first lady explained that she purposely avoided speaking about her appearance during her husband's two terms as president, as she feared it would "take over everything." With Obama set to hit the stage again in 2026, there's no doubt her fans can hardly wait to see what she will wear.
