Erika Kirk Overloaded A TPUSA Tour Outfit With Too Many Outdated Trends At Once
Erika Kirk couldn't have picked a more outdated ensemble when she attended the Turning Point USA (TPUSA) Club America Tour in January 2026. While the TPUSA CEO has worn a few outfits that totally missed the mark, nothing could have prepared fashion-savvy critics for the out-of-style combination of a knit crewneck cardigan, light denim jeans, and white sneakers she debuted at the event. Not only was the pairing outdated, but it was also overly casual and ultimately inappropriate for the occasion. While other attendees arrived dressed up in formal and semi-formal attire, Kirk instead was apparently inspired to go with a far more relaxed aesthetic, wearing what looked like a grandma's sweater and mom jeans, paired with teens' go-to sneakers.
To be fair, if the individual pieces of Kirk's outfit had been styled differently, there might not have been an issue. In fact, a cardigan, light blue jeans, and white sneakers are generally considered safe and versatile wardrobe staples. They can easily be dressed up to suit business casual and formal occasions. The outfit, however, landed in the territory of outdated trends when the mom-of-two styled them together. Elements like color schemes, styles, and overall pairing play a significant part in determining whether an outfit looks vogueish or poorly assembled. For instance, as seen on Vogue, a cardigan sweater with the right bottom and footwear can make a world of difference, transforming a simple look into one that's effortlessly chic and practical, while adding a touch of elegance — but that was not achieved here.
Why Erika Kirk's outfit failed to deliver
While fashion experts such as Who What Wear often endorse refined crewneck sweaters, Kirk's two-toned, cropped-length cardigan with gold ball buttons totally failed to deliver, making the 30-something look frumpy rather than current and stylish. If not styled properly, a cardigan can easily echo vintage 1950s silhouettes, which is exactly what happened when Kirk paired hers with a blue wash, high-waisted, straight-leg jeans. A trendier pairing would have been to go with a darker palette, says Lauren Tappan at Marie Claire. "In the spirit of elevating my wardrobe, I'm choosing sophisticated shades of indigo that feel undeniably elegant, as opposed to ultra-light-wash shades that read more casual," the fashion editor noted.
Doubling down with yet another outdated trend, Kirk could have elevated her look by wearing heels, according to style expert Chi Li (via YouTube), but instead did quite the opposite when she opted for preppy white sneakers. Though the white sneaker has long been a wardrobe classic for many, stylist Jordan Stolch told Women, exclusively, the once-beloved shoe is losing its status as the "default" go-to staple. "This style feels a bit safe or generic," he added, ultimately landing it among our most outdated shoe trends of 2026.
