Michelle And Barack Obama Can't Escape Rumors About Their Marriage

Like any couple in the public eye, Michelle and Barack Obama's relationship is constantly under a microscope. However unlike other politicians, the former first couple have been refreshingly open about the troubles in their marriage. In 2018, Michelle even spoke with Oprah Winfrey about how she and her husband had turned to couple's counseling following the birth of their daughters. But despite her transparency, it seems like the Obamas still can't escape relationship rumors.

Divorce rumors started at the beginning of 2025 after Barack showed up to prominent events, including President Donald Trump's second inauguration and former President Jimmy Carter's funeral, without Michelle on his arm. Meghan McCain, daughter of late Sen. John McCain, added to the mess in a January episode of her podcast "Citizen McCain," claiming "reputable people" had confirmed the rumors.

The Obamas didn't hesitate to shut down the narrative. In a July episode of Michelle's "IMO" podcast, both Barack and the former first lady laughed at the gossip. "She took me back. It was touch and go for a while," the former U.S. president jested. Then, during an August 2025 episode of the "Work in Progress with Sophia Bush" podcast, Michelle revealed her style evolution since leaving the White House, while also touching on the source of the rumors. She said the speculation started after she relaxed her schedule and started making time for her friends."They couldn't even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing." Nevertheless, despite the gossip, more than 30 years after tying the knot, the couple are still going strong.

What does the former first couple's marriage look like now?

As of 2026, Michelle Obama has given a masterclass in unlearning people pleasing behaviour and, despite the rumors, proudly showcases her love for her husband. That year, she took to Instagram to commemorate Valentine's Day, sharing a picture of her and her husband standing next to a large bouquet of roses. In the caption, the former first lady referred to Barack as her "forever Valentine," before closing with, "I love you, always, Barack!"

The former president posted the same picture on Instagram, calling Michelle his "forever dance partner," and concluding the caption with, "I love you, Miche!" Democratic supporters were quick to comment on the love bombing, with one fan writing, "Beautiful Black Love," while another person wrote, "Our forever president and first lady!" There's no doubt that the former first couple are still up there with some of the most iconic political pairings of all time, and on February 15, they were spotted laughing non-stop while watching the NBA All-Star game in California.
