Kate Hudson Was Never The Same After The End Of Her First Marriage
Kate Hudson has been open about the difficult time she experienced at the end of her first marriage. Hudson was just 21 when she married 34-year-old musician Chris Robinson on New Year's Eve 2001, after around a year of dating. But they separated in August 2006 and he filed for divorce months later – and Hudson was never the same after.
The "Almost Famous" actor made no secret of their up and down romance, telling People in 2003, "In the beginning we were so volatile. We were so in love and passionate, and then we would just hate each other and throw stuff around." In 2024, Hudson also gave an insight into their split on "The Howard Stern Show," sharing (via People), "I really did grow out of it, and it was a very hard breakup ... I was very in love with him." That same year, she admitted she learned a lot from her ex-husband and father of her first child. "Chris taught me so much about love and connection and it was just a wonderfully passionate relationship," she said on "Call Her Daddy" in 2024.
With all that going on before she turned 30, it's no surprise Hudson's first marriage made her think differently about walking down the aisle for a second time. When asked by The Independent if she'd ever marry again, Hudson replied, "Probably," but admitted, "Marriage is definitely not a golden ticket — it's not going to solve any challenges in a relationship. But as someone who's lived through ... well, trial and error, I think that the symbolism of marriage, that commitment, is more important to kids than we sometimes think."
Kate Hudson's breakup with Chris Robinson wasn't her only tough split
Kate Hudson's striking transformation has included multiple breakups following her divorce from Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, but one of the toughest was her split from Muse musician Matt Bellamy. Hudson got back into dating after divorce and the two got engaged in 2011, but went their separate ways three years later. The "Song Sung Blue" actor got candid about how that split affected her on "Josh Smith's Great Chat Show" in 2022, sharing, "After my second failed baby daddy relationship, that moment for me was like, 'Okay, now I have to figure this out ... That was really hard for me because I didn't want that to end. But I was like, 'Oh, this is an issue. I need to figure out what this is in my life that I keep this pattern I keep repeating and take accountability for it.' That was the biggest change for me in my life."
Hudson's relationship lows didn't stop her believing in love, though. In 2021, she accepted a proposal from her long-time friend turned fiancé Danny Fujikawa, even though another walk down the aisle wasn't high on her priority list. "I just don't have the same, kind of like, 'Oh my God, I'm going to get married and I can't wait and I can't wait for the party.' It's the opposite," she said on "The Drew Barrymore Show" in 2025. "I'm like, I have to plan it. And then it's going to cost so much money ... It's just a lot," she added. At the time of writing, the two are still engaged but haven't married.
