You May Not Recognize Winnie From The Wonder Years These Days

Danica McKellar, the actor behind the beloved Winnie Cooper from the nostalgic hit show, "The Wonder Years," may be one of many '90s stars who are unrecognizable, but that's not because of any drastic Hollywood transformation. It's simply because she's no longer the fringe-and-glasses sporting girl audiences came to love. Some might say she has aged like a true 'wonder' since the show debuted in 1988.

In the coming-of-age television series centered on suburban family life, McKellar's Winnie was introduced to viewers as the ultimate girl-next-door, often sporting cute, preppy outfits, and having a good head on her shoulders. Although decades have passed since the show's end, the actor has maintained a wholesome image similar to her character's well into her adult years.

Besides rocking the same fetching face card all through her 20s, 30s, 40s, and even 50s, McKellar has built an impressive resumé as a mathematician, author, screenwriter, and director. She also holds a math degree from UCLA and is a successful author of several educational books. For the star, pivoting to academia was intended to help her discover her true self outside of acting. "I needed to figure out who else I was besides Winnie Cooper," she told the hosts on "Hey Dude ... The '90s Called". For McKellar, being remembered simply for her role on "The Wonder Years" felt "too limiting," and she was compelled to seek deeper validation in her life.

Winnie Cooper is all grown up!

After proving to herself that she was in fact much more than a teen star, McKellar leaped right back into acting following a four-year hiatus. However, the transition wasn't easy.

The child star has admit that she struggled with self-doubt and the feeling that she had some catching up to do. As a result, she took on small roles in indie films before eventually landing a long-running gig on "The West Wing." It was a move that reaffirmed her decision to return to the screen. "That show was a turning point. It reminded me that I still had something to offer in the industry," she told Closer Weekly, adding, "Looking back, I know everything unfolded the way it needed to. I had to step away from Hollywood to come back on my own terms, and that made all the difference."

Since then, McKellar has added the title 'producer' to her repertoire through her work with the Great American Family channel. She has also been a regular feature on the Hallmark Channel and is often dubbed the "queen of Christmas movies" by fans for her many holiday roles. Some of her most memorable films include "Crown for Christmas," "Very, Very, Valentine," "You, Me & the Christmas Trees," and "Wedding Bells."
