9 Of The Worst Red Carpet Looks In BAFTA Awards History

When awards season kicks off, many tune in to see who all the winners (and losers) are at the Oscars, Golden Globes, and Emmys. We would be remiss if we didn't mention the British Academy Film Awards, held in London, England, where celebs everywhere convene dressed in their finery. Just like the other major awards shows, the BAFTAs require black-tie attire, which means only the best designer duds. But just because the 'fits are extravagant doesn't mean the celebs always get it right, and many have landed on worst-dressed lists over the years.

The BAFTAs have been around since the late 1940s, so it's only natural that there would be some sartorial flubs during its decades-long tenure. Some of our fave stars have shown up in strange garbs, worn inappropriate red-carpet attire, or have come vastly underdressed. For a night as big as the BAFTAs, it's important for famous faces to nail their outfits, and unfortunately, more than a handful have failed to deliver winning looks over the years.

Ariana Grande was one ruffle away from floating away

Ariana Grande's style transformation has been absolutely stunning, which is why her 2025 BAFTAs gown left us scratching our heads. The pink and black Louis Vuitton dress featured a tight, low-cut bodice that brought risqué glam to the red carpet, but the bottom half was a puffy mess. There were layers upon layers of ruching, with the top part flaring out like wings. We get that Grande is still in her "Wicked" era, but this look was not giving Glinda the Good.

Helena Bonham Carter barked up the wrong tree with her Dalmatian-esque dress

Was Helen Bonham Carter auditioning for "101 Dalmatians" at the BAFTAs in 2021? It sure looked that way — she was channeling real Cruella de Vil vibes in her black and white polka dot dress. Not only was the pattern too basic for the black tie event, but the frilly tiered skirt was a bit much with the dizzying amount of dots. Bonham Carter is known for her quirky style, so the unexpected is much expected. Still, there's a way to lean into the polka dot renaissance without looking too twee, and the "Enola Holmes" star could have done without all those ruffles.

Millie Bobby Brown's attempt at Goth dressing fell flat

Millie Bobby Brown had just turned 18 when she attended the 2022 BAFTAs, so naturally, she went for a more grown-up look. Her Gothic gown consisted of a low V-cut bodice worn with a lacy bralette, a peplum waist that transitioned into a sheer lacy skirt, and long black velvet gloves. While we get where she was going with this 'fit, there was way too much going on, especially with the odd trail of lacy material going down her back. It's safe to say that this was one of Brown's outfits that totally missed the mark.

Kristen Scott Thomas' black and white dress was a snooze-fest

Kristen Scott Thomas is not known for wearing fussy frocks on the red carpet, but the overly simple black-and-white gown she wore to the BAFTAs in 2018 was an utter bore. With the three-quarter-length sleeves and white paneling going down the front, it looked like she was wearing a long coat. The "Mission: Impossible" star also kept her hair and jewelry simple, which only added to her low-key awards show look. While understated dresses can sometimes make a statement, like Julia Roberts' 2001 Valentino gown, Thomas' ensemble was simply not awards show-worthy.

Jennifer Garner looked like she was wearing a baby carrier

Jennifer Garner must have been experiencing baby fever at the 2013 BAFTAs, because the top of her Roland Mouret ensemble oddly resembled a Baby Björn. The billowy chest area could have been mistaken for a snoozing infant's head, and the angled white straps only added to the illusion of Garner bringing her wee one to the event. The "Alias" star usually opts for feminine, flirty looks for the red carpet, so this structured two-toned fit was quite a departure. It may have looked chic on the runway with a shorter skirt in Kelly green, but Garner's version just didn't land.

Naomi Campbell was not spellbinding in her hooded cape

We're not sure why Naomi Campbell showed up to the 2024 BAFTAs dressed as Severus Snape, but here we are. Of all the 'fits we expected the supermodel to wear, a long black hooded cape and ruffled dress was not it. Sure, she brought drama to the red carpet, but instead of sashaying, Campbell looked like she'd stepped out of a "Harry Potter" movie. We know that London in February can get pretty chilly, but there was no need for all those layers.

Rebel Wilson dressed for a corporate party rather than the BAFTAs

If someone said, "I'd like to speak to the manager" at the 2016 BAFTAs, we wouldn't be surprised if Rebel Wilson clocked in for her shift. She looked just like one in her black jacket and matching high-low skirt, combined with a pair of sensible pumps. The "Pitch Perfect" star would have fit right in at a holiday office shindig rather than the British counterpart to the Oscars, especially with her messy waves and lack of bling. Judging from Wilson's expression, she was not feeling her 'fit that night either.

Margot Robbie proved that couture doesn't always equal chic

Margot Robbie tends to do right when it comes to her fashion choices, unless you count the time she wore an eyesore of a dress to the 2019 BAFTAs. The Chanel couture number featured a bodice embellished with multi-colored jewels, which was already a lot. But added bizarreness came from giant black ruffled shoulders, which made Robbie look ready to fly away, and a matching hem in a mermaid silhouette. If we were lucky enough to have a bespoke designer dress, we definitely wouldn't have gone Robbie's route, and her look just proves that even couture can look tacky.

Kylie Minogue should have done the Loco-Motion out of this dress

As a longtime singer and dancer, Kylie Minogue has killer legs, so we don't blame her for wanting to flaunt them at the BAFTAs in 2007. However, her bright blue dress with a dizzying amount of swirls and rhinestones was not the way to do it. The entire creation looked like a poster of '90s graphics, reminiscent of the "Saved By the Bell" opening. Additionally, the mismatched sleeves seemed like an attempt to give the sheath dress an avant-garde feel, but sorely missed the mark. We hope Minogue keeps this mid-aughts mess in the vault forever.
