If there ever was a '90s nepo baby, Tori Spelling was it. Born to Hollywood producer Aaron Spelling and his wife Candy Spelling, Tori got her big break in the industry as Donna Martin in the hit show "Beverly Hills, 90210." Over 10 years, viewers got to see Martin navigate high school friendships, fall in love with her first boyfriend, and finally lose her virginity. Off-camera, Spelling's life was just as dramatic; while fans got a glimpse from reading headlines, the "Deadly Pursuits" star bared it all in her many memoirs, which received some impressive reviews.
Spelling's first memoir, "sTORI Telling," was met with success and even took the top spot on The New York Times Best Sellers list (so, you need a celebrity memoir that makes a good book club pick, that's always an option). Her following autobiography, "Mommywood," made the coveted list as well, proving that fans love a deep dive into the reality star's life. When it comes to celeb memoirs, reviews say it all, and here's how readers ranked Spelling's four juicy, tell-all books.
4. Mommywood
A year after her debut memoir, Tori Spelling came out with "Mommywood," which was centered on her young kids and how she raised them in the spotlight. "It is a continuation of storytelling and my life [after] I had Liam. This is my life now — being a mom of two, being married, being back in Hollywood," she told the Toronto Star ahead of the book's release. Spelling's recounts of juggling kids, wanting to raise them in a normal suburban neighborhood, and insight into her complicated relationship with her mom had many readers amused. However, some were put off by the actor's privileged life and constant bashing of Candy.
"[Tori] is certainly bitter about her relationship with her mom, as evidenced by numerous little jabs throughout the book, which I thought was in poor taste after ... the 50th time," one reader shared on Goodreads. "She talks about ditching a double stroller in a parking garage because she didn't know how to fold it. She talks about shopping, [traveling], and a lifestyle most wouldn't dream of," another griped. "Sorry girl — you aren't relatable."
Still, others were entertained by Spelling's stories, especially the one about having to scoop up poop from a pool. Overall, readers gave "Mommywood" an average of 3.56 on Goodreads, making it the least popular memoir of Spelling's to date.
3. Uncharted TerriTori
While "sTORI Telling" is about Tori Spelling's rise to fame while growing up in Beverly Hills and "Mommywood" is focused on raising kids as celebrities, "Uncharted TerriTori" delves more deeply into Spelling's innermost thoughts. "It was a little bit of a different journey for me, with this book. I didn't really know what it was about when I started writing it. ... As I was writing, my life just happened, and the book turned into a whole different thing than what I thought it would be," Spelling told Simon & Schuster Books. "This book is different because it's a very intimate, personal journey, and it's about looking inward and deciding what you want in life and going for that and believing in yourself, and finding hope."
Spelling's 2010 memoir received mixed reviews, with readers giving it a 3.59 on Goodreads. Some die-hard fans loved the campy tales, and one wrote, "I always find it fun to read about Hollywood stars[,] and this didn't disappoint. No matter how much stars like Tori Spelling want us to know how much they are like 'us,' they simply aren't." On the other hand, there were many who were annoyed at Spelling's hypochondriac ways and rolled their eyes at her using psychics to get a medical diagnosis. Suffice it to say, "Uncharted TerriTori" isn't one of the best memoirs from former child stars you need to read ASAP.
2. Spelling It Like It Is
Tori Spelling's latest memoir to date, "Spelling It Like It Is," was released in 2013 and received a 3.63 rating on Goodreads. Many may wonder just why a celeb needs to push out more than one or two memoirs, but Spelling explained that she wanted to update fans on her life after welcoming two more kids. "I only had Liam and Stella when I wrote my last book, 'Uncharted TerriTORI,' so I was like, 'I want to do another one,'" the author told She Knows. "For me, the thing I really wanted to tell — that was a big story for me — was my fourth pregnancy with my son, Finn. It was a pregnancy that was really difficult, and I had some really dark moments."
Readers resonated with Spelling's difficult pregnancy and appreciated her sharing the intimate moments of her life, even the ones that weren't all roses. "Tori went through A LOT, and I have an incredible amount of respect for her (and for sharing her struggles), celebrity or not. If nothing else, this final memoir reminded me that at the end of the day, we are all doing the best we can and have our own challenges to overcome," a reader wrote on Goodreads. And of course, there were some negative remarks, especially when it came to Spelling's kids needing a swimming pool like their lives depended on it. Still, a celeb memoir isn't complete without some tone-deaf moments, especially if you grew up in Beverly Hills, like Spelling did.
1. sTORI Telling
Tori Spelling's very first memoir, "sTORI Telling," ranked first on our list, with an average of 3.63 on Goodreads. While that rating "Spelling It Like It Is," the number of reviews was exponentially higher, at over 17,000 (compared to "Spelling It Like It Is" at a little over 2,600). Fans were delightfully surprised at the witty tone, frank details about Spelling's life, and juicy scoops about what went on behind the scenes on "Beverly Hills, 90210." Those who didn't follow the actor were also taken by the book, with many finding it an easy read. "This turned out to be a surprisingly good memoir. I'm not much of a memoir reader because I don't like heavy narration, but you never feel weighed down by it in this book. I wanted to read the book mostly for the 90210 dirt," a Goodreads reviewer shared.
One librarian admitted to enjoying Spelling's stories, writing on Goodreads, "I know I should be reading the greats — Tolstoy, Austen, Dickens. They are heavy meals worthy of consumption. But then there are times when you just want to scarf down a dozen donuts — that's what reading 'sTORI Telling' was for me without all the nasty calories and only a little guilt." Who would have thought that Spelling's first foray into writing would be a celebrity memoir that is actually a great, well-written book?
How we ranked Tori Spelling's memoirs
Our list of Tori Spelling's memoirs from best to worst was purely based on reviews found on Goodreads. We took a look at her four autobiographies, and it was such a super close race that we had to go down to the decimal. "Uncharted TerriTori" beat "Mommywood" by just 0.03 points, and "Spelling It Like It Is" tied rating-wise with "sTORI Telling." However, the latter was the clear winner, with tens of thousands of ratings, showing that readers were intrigued about Spelling's life behind the cameras.
According to the reviews, many enjoyed reading about the "Beverly Hills, 90120" star's frank reflections on her life growing up in the spotlight, while a good amount found her complaints to be overly pretentious. Regardless, it's not an easy feat to top The New York Times Best Sellers list, especially with a debut memoir, so Spelling is clearly doing something right.
