Melinda French Gates Was Never The Same After Her Divorce From Bill (In All The Best Ways)

For years, Melinda French Gates, who is one of the amazing women leading the charge on our recovery from girlboss culture, was defined as the wife of one of the richest men in the world. Despite her own impressive resume, which included a thriving career in tech and co-founding the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, her identity was often filtered through her marriage to Bill Gates or as a mother to Bill Gates' children, rather than who she was as an individual and her own accomplishments. Luckily, that's changed, and she hasn't been the same since her divorce in 2021.

In the years following her divorce, Melinda seems freer and is clearly leaning into the parts of her life that reflect her own priorities. From sharpening her philanthropic focus to expanding the work of her company, Pivotal Ventures, which focuses on helping advance women's power and influence around the world, she's entered a more intentional and self-directed chapter of her life. The philanthropist, published author, and businesswoman is no longer living by the expectations of a high-profile marriage, and she seems more grounded and confident than ever.

That sense of change, clarity, and newfound life is something Melinda herself has articulated. In a 2024 interview with Time, Melinda reflected on divorced life and said, "I feel like, Wow, I'm 60. I better surround myself with people and still travel [so that] I'm still absolutely learning, because the world is moving, the world is changing ... I'm totally unencumbered to work in any way I want."

She's also opened herself up to love again

The post-divorce Melinda French Gates not only has had an epic divorce glow-up, but she's also made some room in her new life for love. In an April 2025 interview with PEOPLE, the philanthropist confirmed she was seeing the founder of Tavour, Philip Vaughn. When asked about her relationship, she kept it calm and smiled as she simply said, "I am yes — very, very happy ... I'm just going to leave it there."

The couple made their red carpet debut in October 2025 at The Albies, just a year after the two were spotted holding hands in New York City. While the power couple may not have the most ideal age gap for a successful relationship, it's clear that Melinda is happy and approaching this chapter of her life with confidence and self-assurance. Not only is she thriving in the romance department in her new chapter, but she's also taking up all kinds of opportunities and broadening her horizons.

In addition to running her philanthropic foundation and business, she published two more books, and she even took a swing at acting as she made a special guest appearance on Apple TV's "The Loot." Oh, and did we mention she also has a conversation series, "Moments that Make Us," where she interviews women from all different walks of life — from civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen to actor Reese Witherspoon, who's also had a stunning post-divorce transformation. She's truly doing it all, and it underscores just how expansive and self-directed her life has become since her divorce.
