Meryl Streep Outfits That Miranda Priestly Would Approve Of

When it comes to impressing Miranda Priestly, it's not easy. In fact, it's downright difficult. Granted, Miranda, the editor-in-chief of the fictional magazine Runway is also fictional; her character in 2006's "The Devil Wears Prada" and its upcoming 2026 sequel had such major impact on our cultural landscape that she might as well be real. After all, who hasn't occasionally caught a glimpse of their reflection in a storefront window and briefly thought, "Yes, Miranda Priestly would approve." Or, on an off day, thought "No way."

Although Anne Hathaway has outfits that would get Andy Sachs' stamp of approval, Miranda Priestly, so perfectly played by Meryl Streep, is a far more difficult egg to crack. Even Streep, despite playing the fashion-obsessed EIC, doesn't consider herself very fashionably inclined. "I never thought I was somebody that would be on the cover of magazines in fashion wearing fashions! It's not me," the actor said in 2008 on PBS Digital Studio's "Blank on Blank" series, via Salon. "But that is what movie stardom entails."

While that may have been the case, Streep has proven time and time again that she's not only one of the greatest living actresses, with the award nominations and multiple wins to back it up, but she definitely has worn some looks that would totally impress her iconic character. From Valentino to Lanvin, and so many others, Streep has rocked some top-notch grade-A ensembles. In other words, Miranda would be proud.

2024: Bringing the lavaliere blouse to the Golden Globes

For the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards in January 2024, Meryl Streep's look was so fierce, it basically made everyone around her appear underdressed. Wearing a custom Valentino full-length sequin skirt and matching blazer, complete with an ivory lavaliere blouse underneath, Streep literally showed the world how you conquer the red carpet. While this unique cut has been around for a while, it's only been in the last few decades that it's become a political statement – so much so, that it became a staple for Kamala Harris when she wanted her outfits to deliver a message. Perhaps, because 2024 was an election year, Streep's choice to wear the bow style to the Globes was no coincidence. Either way, Miranda would love it.

2009: Off-the-shoulder by Alberta Ferretti

Despite the fact that she never really saw herself as a fashion person, Meryl Streep can pull off many different types of looks and the majority of them really work for her. For the 81st Annual Academy Awards in February 2009, Streep wore this stunning off-the-shoulder light gray gown by Alberta Ferretti with just enough of a train to be elegant, but not overwhelming. Everything about this is soft and refined, with Streep keeping her jewelry to a minimum, sweeping her blonde hair up, and perfectly matching her clutch to her gown. It's giving some major ethereal energy which, considering Streep was nominated for Best Actress for her role as Sister Aloysius Beauvier in "Doubt" that year, makes it a perfect choice.

2015: Teaching a master class in chicness at the Oscars

If ever there was an outfit that Meryl Streep wore which would have garnered not only Miranda Priestly's approval, but her utmost respect, it's this look by Lanvin that she wore to the 87th Annual Academy Awards in 2015. The matching black blazer and full-length skirt, complete with the drapey, off-white blouse, is the ultimate master class in how to stay chic into your 60s and beyond. It's sophisticated, yet effortlessly casual and cool, and the belt and drop earrings bring just enough to sparkle to the equation to make it Oscars-ready.

2015: Stealing the show in Issey Miyake

Although Meryl Streep tends to keep things classic with sophisticated clean lines, when she attended the gala screening of "Into The Woods" at The Curzon Mayfair in January 2015, she really leveled up her attire. Instead of going for a traditional-looking coat to brave the London winter, she opted for a bronzy-chocolate coat by the Japanese designer Issey Miyake. Paired with black pants and black shoes, the coat, which looks more like a work of art than fashion, proved that Streep isn't afraid to take risks in the name of personal style.

2014: Putting the class in classic with Lanvin

While some woman of a certain age like to hide parts of their bodies, like their necks and shoulders, that has yet to be the case with Meryl Streep. Instead, she's embracing and flaunting what she's got, as she's doing here in a full-length black skirt and one off-the-shoulder blouse — all of which are by Lanvin. Although Streep tends to keep things simple and minimalistic in regards to jewelry, when she attended the 86th Annual Academy Awards in 2014 in this ensemble, she added two bracelets to her look, along with the usual small pair of earrings. The belt, too, was bedazzled just enough to take what could have been a serious outfit in a fun direction.

2006: You simply can never go wrong with Valentino

When it comes to dressing to the nines in a proper, well-designed, and romantically scripted gown, you can never go wrong with Valentino. The Italian fashion designer knows not only how to dress a woman's body, but how to make her feel like royalty in the process. As we can see in this deep, rich violet empire waist dress with embellishments on the skirt, it was the perfect choice for Meryl Streep to wear in 2006 at the 78th Annual Academy Awards. It's such a classic cut and design that, almost 20 years later, it still works.

2012: Bringing a splash of punk to the BAFTAs

If you're going to the 2012 British Academy Film Awards to collect an award for playing Margaret Thatcher, as Meryl Streep did in "The Iron Lady," then you definitely want to be dressed by a British designer. While there are certainly a whole boatload of British designers to choose from, Streep went with Vivienne Westwood to create this black strapless full-length gown with a corset bust and matching bolero embellished with sparkles. Like most of Westwood designs, this look is equal parts formal and punk rock, making it a fun choice for the occasion.

2012: Proving gowns with pockets are always a good idea

For Meryl Streep, 2012 was a good year — at least as far as awards season went. Not only did Streep pick up the BAFTA for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, but she also took home a Golden Globe at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture. For the event, Streep decided to switch things up a bit, rocking a full-length shirt-dress gown by Alessandra Rich with western-inspired gold embroidered designs across the bodice. While the dress may have seemed random, especially considering the role for which Streep won the award, there's something really relaxed about the look — which might have something to do with those pockets.

2015: Making a statement in a chic pantsuit

When Meryl Streep accepted the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award For Excellence In Film in 2015, she did so in an ultra-chic black pantsuit. To complete the look, Streep wore a champagne-colored blouse under the blazer, a black ribbon tie, and a sparkly brooch on the lapel. Streep knew exactly what she was doing when she picked this look, because since the inception of the award only men had won it up until that point, making Streep the first woman. If this isn't one of those celebrity menswear outfits that make you want to raid your boyfriend's closet, then nothing will.

2025: Hanging out with the Clooneys in Dolce & Gabbana

In October 2025, Meryl Streep was one of the dozens of celebrities to attend the Clooney Foundation For Justice's The Albies at The Natural History Museum in London. For the occasion, which didn't involve her accepting an award for a change, the actor let loose a bit, wearing a black sheer tunic with green embellishments by Dolce & Gabbana over black cigarette pants. As one of the celebs who has embraced their graying natural hair, Streep looked gorgeous and refreshed at the event. Between her outfit and ability to make silvers strands look so darn cool, you know this Streep ensemble would earn Miranda's approval for sure.
