Reese Witherspoon's Favorite Book Of 2025 Is Her Book Club's Top Rated Pick Of The Year

It's always an honor for a book to be chosen for Reese's Book Club, but having Reese Witherspoon name it her all-time fave of the year is on another level. This year, that distinction goes to Clare Leslie Hall's "Broken Country," a bestseller that the "Sweet Home Alabama" star selected for March 2025. "That one made me cry," Witherspoon told BuzzFeed Shopping of the book. In the comments, many fans agreed with one writing, "It was SO good! Cried in a coffee shop.

The novel follows a woman named Beth, whose marriage is disrupted when her old flame, Gabriel, comes back to town. But "Broken Country" is not just about a love triangle. There's love, loss, and a murder trial woven into the story, with a surprise twist at the end. Witherspoon shared with People after announcing the month's book club selection, "It touched this really essential human part of me that I think is very universal: this idea of your first love being lost, and then this opportunity to find that true love one more time and have one more opportunity." The producer isn't the only one who has raved about Hall's book, and there's a reason "Broken Country" resonated with fans so well, with the reviews speaking for themselves.

Broken Country will give you an emotional hangover

Some books are written so well that readers feel a period of grief and mourning upon finishing the last page. That's what Clare Leslie Hall's "Broken Country" did, with one fan sharing on Goodreads, "I think this book has already broken me into a million pieces — in the best possible way! It carries a melodramatic tone but is heartbreakingly powerful, deeply penetrating your emotions." Another wrote, "I was filled with every raw emotion available. There was love, heartbreak, grief, anger, intensity, and sadness. In fact, have tissues handy because the ending will probably leave you needing some." With recommendations like that, it's not surprising the novel was ranked highest by reviewers among all of Reese's Book Club's 2025 picks. It was also named Amazon's book of the year.

Fans will be happy to hear that they'll be able to watch "Broken Country" play out on-screen. In April 2024, Deadline announced that Witherspoon's media company, Hello Sunshine, and Sony's 3000 Pictures bought the rights to the book. As of yet, no details surrounding the production have been released, but we wouldn't be surprised if the film is as well-received as "Where the Crawdad Sings" by Delia Owens, which was also produced by Hello Sunshine. Just be sure to have a pack of tissues on hand, as you'll likely spill a few tears.
