Sydney Sweeney Is Trying To Make The MAGA Bob Happen (And We Wish She Wouldn't)
Sydney Sweeney recently underwent a dramatic hair transformation, but, unfortunately, not everyone is loving her new style. The actor appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on December 1 with a sleek, blond bob that was several inches shorter than her signature 'do. Though it would seem like a perfectly ordinary cut, according to some social media users, the hair choice is a pretty obvious indicator of Sweeney's current personal brand.
"She looks more republican every day like what the hell is that bob," one X user hit back in a viral tweet, which has over 234,000 likes at the time of writing. "I love her but that ... maga bob has to go," another wrote. A third compared her to Fox News anchors Laura Ingraham and Shannon Bream, who have sported very similar neck-length, straight-across blond bobs. Though Sweeney hasn't publicly spoken out in support for President Donald Trump, she stated her Republican political affiliation when she registered to vote in Florida in 2024 (though she's yet to fully embrace the Mar-A-Lago face trend many outspoken Republican women have adopted). But it wasn't just the MAGA vibes that had fans urging her to ditch the bob.
Though bob haircuts are often flattering for older women, sometimes, for the younger generation, they can be aging. In Sweeney's case, the look is too harsh and needs more layers. As Valery Joseph, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Valery Joseph Salons, explained to New Beauty, "A shorter cut draws the eye up, whereas a longer style draws the eye down, taking the focus directly off the face. A blunt bob is the most dramatic, so adding layers to break it down and even a sweepy bang will soften the look and make it less aging." Fortunately, the next day, Sweeney was back to chest-length locks for the New York premiere of "The Housemaid."
This isn't the first time Sydney Sweeney has rocked a bob
Though Sydney Sweeney's new bob made serious waves on social media, it isn't the first time she's chopped off her locks. At the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscars party, the "Anyone But You" star wore a rounded, layered short haircut. Unlike the MAGA bob, which features harsh, blunt ends, this look featured soft waves curled inward and voluminous side bangs, which better complimented her face shape. Equally, the brassy brond shade (which became one of the hottest fall 2025 hair trends) provided more dimension to make the style appear fresher, less stiff, and more youthful.
The star also embraced shorter hair in a flattering, modern way in 2022. Sweeney's hairstylist Glen "Coco" Oropeza (who denied that her late night show hair was a wig in an Instagram comment) shared stunning Instagram snaps of Sweeney with a choppy, tousled take on the lob in 2022. That version was far better received by the star's fans, with one commenting on the upload, "Sydney Sweeney look[s] beautiful." She still looked glamorous with her newer, blunt bob, it just wasn't her best hairdo.
