4 Of Young Sheldon Star Raegan Revord's Favorite Books
Aside from acting, Raegan Revord's other passion is books, and the Missy Cooper portrayer from "Young Sheldon" is a super seasoned reader with a published YA novel of their own called "Rules for Fake Girlfriends." Revord is such a fan of reading that they started a book club in 2019 that highlights Young Adult picks every month. "I try to find stories that are interesting from the get-go and stories that are diverse because I want people to feel seen and find someone in each story that they can relate to," the actor shared with People.
Revord has been devouring books since they were a kid, and naturally, several of these reads have become favorites. The young ingenue's tastes are quite eclectic, and they love everything from world-building books to throwback childhood page-turners. In fact, Revord's favorite read is a celeb book club-approved fantasy called "The Midnight Library," written by Matt Haig. Of course, their list of treasured stories just grows by the year, and some of the "Young Sheldon" star's beloved books are sure to hook you as well.
Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Raegan Revord often shares their latest reads on social media, and in September 2022, they declared that their all-time favorite book was "Shadow and Bone" by Leigh Bardugo. "The author is amazing and the world-building is chef's kiss," Revord stated in a YouTube Short. In an interview with Unclear, they shared, "I'm almost done with all of her books and I'm just in awe of how talented she is. Every twist catches me off guard, and it's so inspiring to read her books and see how amazing they are! I hope one day I could get even halfway to her level of expertise."
"Shadow and Bone," which follows the magical Alina Starkov, is also a hit with readers, with one writing on Goodreads, "What a fantastic fantasy novel! The writing is beautiful in this book, paired with complex characters and an engaging story. I'm so glad I finally got around to reading this one, as it definitely stands out in the fantasy and young adult genre." Those who are fans of the trilogy can binge-watch the live-action adaptation of the books on Netflix, which we're sure Revord already gobbled up.
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
It's always fun to revisit books we read as kids, and Raegan Revord shared several of their faves in a September 4 Instagram post. "Some of my favorite books growing up that stemmed my love for reading. Are your favorites listed here? Share them below!" Along with nostalgic picks such as "The Boxcar Children" and "Harriet the Spy," Revord declared their love for "The Mysterious Benedict Society" by Trenton Lee Stewart. A fan replied, "'The Mysterious Benedict Society' is one of my favorite books of all time!!!! Even as an adult, I've gone back and reread it. So glad it made the list!"
It's no surprise that Revord's list of their go-to childhood books is long. "I like to joke that I came home reading from the hospital [as a baby]. We have a lot of teachers and librarians in our family, so it's always been a big influence in my life," they told People. Revord added, "But because I've been reading so much ever since I was little, [I've] always been in the world of books."
The Only Road by Alexandra Diaz
Whether you're reading for fun or need to cultivate the best questions for your book club discussion, meaningful stories that change your life are ones you'll never forget. According to Raegan Revord, they've read quite a handful of books that opened up their mind, which they shared with Barnes & Noble in 2019. At the top of Revord's list was "The Only Road" by Alexandra Diaz. The novel follows two kids named Jaime and Angela, who are faced with danger in Guatemala. They make a harrowing journey to the United States in order to find freedom and a safe place they could call home. Revord said of the emotional tale, "This book is a heart-wrenching story, but one that needs to be told. It really helped me to see what immigrants and refugees go through in order to stay safe. It is an emotional rollercoaster that I loved reading."
"The Only Road" was written by Diaz with the intention of bringing to light the hardships surrounding immigration. "Young people read about slavery and the Holocaust, but not so often about what is happening with immigration today. I would like readers to know this is something that is going on in the world today, possibly even happened to classmates or neighbors," the author shared with From the Mixed Up Files. Diaz continued, "And for those readers who have experienced something similar, I wanted to remind them that they are not alone and there's always hope."
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
If you haven't yet read "Yellowface by R.F. Kuang," you're missing out on a witty satire that uses dark humor to call out cultural appropriation. It's one of the best books of the 2020s by AAPI authors to add to your TBR list, but Raegan Revord is already ahead of the game. In 2024, they named "Yellowface" as one of their top five of that year on Read With Raegan's website. "This book is a must-read for anyone who loves a juicy, morally complex story," Revord wrote. They shared, "It's an unflinching exploration of identity, privilege, and cultural appropriation that kept me turning the pages late into the night. I felt like I was holding my breath the whole time. If you're ready for a thought-provoking story that'll spark a million discussions, pick this one up immediately."
For those who have already read "Yellowface," Revord recommends another book that'll be sure to hook them. On May 27, the actor shared through their book club's Instagram account, "If 'Yellowface' and 'Bunny' [by Mona Awad] had a chaotic, unhinged little sister, it would be 'Julie Chan Is Dead' [by Liann Zhang]. This month's Read With Raegan pick is wild in the best way. It's dark, funny, sharp, and totally addictive. Have you started it yet??" Yet another great gripping tale to add to our TBR list, thanks to Revord.
