Julianne Hough Reveals The DWTS Moment That Brought Her Confidence Back To Life On Stage

There's no denying that Julianne Hough's surprise dance number on the season 32 of "Dancing With The Stars," left an impression on fans. Between the use of the TikTok song "Man in Finance," and the dramatic skybox entrance, it was a performance practically designed to go viral. But while the appearance no doubt marked a special moment for longtime fans, it also meant something special for Hough herself. During an exclusive interview with TVLine, the longtime pro dancer-turned-host revealed that the special performance became a turning point for her, giving her a boost of confidence she didn't realize she needed for so long.

"That number kind of gave me my confidence back in a way," she explained. "I haven't danced on the show in so long... and for a moment I was like, 'Oh, sh**, I still got it.'" Hough had retired as a performer on the show back in 2009 before later returning as a guest judge in 2013. But before that, her experience had been marked by ups and downs. During one performance back in season 7, Hough experienced a medical emergency while on stage that landed her in the hospital. In 2019, she also got candid with People about her lifelong struggles with anxiety and depression, even while she experienced success. Despite these challenges, Hough continued to leave a mark on "Dancing With The Stars," influencing countless fans and dancers alike to keep going. And that season 32 performance is only proof that it's never too late to get back into doing what you love.

Julianne Hough has been present for the most iconic DWTS moments

It's easy to forget how long Julianne Hough, who just might have had one of the best celebrity bobs of 2024, has been a part of the "Dancing With The Stars" legacy. She first joined the show back in 2007 when she was just 18-years-old, and went on to take home the winning title in season 4 and 5. A few years later, she moved from the stage to behind the judge's chair, and eventually, became a co-host alongside Alfonso Ribeiro. In that time, she managed to rack up numerous accolades, including Emmy nominations and recognition for her choreography. She was also present for many of the show's most iconic moments, including when two audience members protested Olympic athlete Ryan Lochte's performance back in season 23.

That kind of longevity in a particular space is special. Her brother Derek Hough made sure everyone knew that during the conversation with TVLine. When his sister's special season 32 performance came up, he said, "I was so glad she did that because some of the reactions from people were like, 'Oh my gosh! I didn't know she danced.'... They're blown away, which is awesome... It means that there's new people watching the show..." He emphasized that she was a key factor in motivating him to join the show as well.

Beyond her wins and roles, Hough's presence on "Dancing With The Stars" radiates positivity. Fans admire her energy, charisma, and ability to deeply connect with not only the contestants but also the viewers. Whether she's performing as a dancer, judging, or hosting, Hough's energy is just what DWTS needs each and every season. Who knows? She might just surprise everyone with another unforgettable performance.
