Trust us when we say there's something for everyone this early fall, because we've got everything from historical love stories to thought-provoking political essays, and almost everything in between.
Following August 2025's celebrity book club picks, Dua Lipa's Service95 and Natalie Portman's Nat's Book Club have announced poignant picks that draw attention to important and timely social issues, including racism, women's rights, and politics. For those hoping for a novel detailing a more light-hearted love story and its long-lasting repercussions while sipping on a fresh pumpkin spice latte, though, turn your attention to Jenna Bush Hager's September choice. The TV personality showered praise on this month's Read With Jenna pick, deeming it one of her favorite book club reads ever on "Today." We've also got choices from Dakota Johnson's TeaTime Pictures and Emma Roberts's Belletrist, creating a truly varied month of reading.
Dua Lipa's Service95 — The Trees by Percival Everett
Dua Lipa's Service95 chose Percival Everett's "The Trees" as its September 2025 pick. The novel tells the story of Mississippi detectives who are tasked with unraveling mysterious murders that include multiple bodies. They soon discover a link to the horrific, real-life murder of Emmett Till. For those unfamiliar with the harrowing case, Till was a 14-year-old boy who was murdered in a racially motivated attack in 1955. In the book, the Mississippi police know they've got a disturbing nationwide crisis on their hands and are forced to confront hatred and racism head-on.
Writing on Service95's Instagram, Lipa had nothing but praise for the poignant, historical fiction mystery. "It's Percival at his very best — delivering one-liners that will make you howl with laughter, while simultaneously punching you in the gut," the "Don't Start Now" hitmaker wrote. And she's not the only one giving Everett his dues. On Goodreads, the 2021 book received a 4.06-star rating out of five, with over 48,880 ratings, and is ideal for those who want to read historical fiction with a real-life anchor.
Dakota Johnson's TeaTime Pictures — The Dilemmas of Working Women by Fumio Yamamoto
Members of Dakota Johnson's TeaTime Pictures book club are taking on the classic "The Dilemmas of Working Women" by Fumio Yamamoto, translated by Brian Bergstrom. Announcing the pick on Instagram, Tea Time Pictures promised, "It will rattle your brain and heart." And they weren't wrong.
"The Dilemmas of Working Women" is an undisputed feminist classic. The Japanese book was originally published in 2000 and became a huge hit in Japan due to its all-too-relatable honest storytelling about the realities of being a modern woman. The book is a collection of five stories. In the first, we meet a woman forced to deal with a tough divorce and the loss of her business at the same time. In the second, Yamamoto details the life of a woman recovering from serious illnesses, and the third installment tells the story of a multi-faceted working mom struggling to balance her new normal. The fourth and fifth stories delve into the difficulties a young woman experiences in trying to decide if marriage is right for her, while the other is about an eccentric palm reader who lives a quirky life that doesn't fit in with societal norms. At the time of writing, on Goodreads, the book holds a rating of 3.75 stars out of 299 reviews.
Emma Roberts's Belletrist — Finding Grace by Loretta Rothschild
To match Emma Roberts's reading vibe for September 2025, sink your teeth into her book club Belletrist's pick, Loretta Rothschild's "Finding Grace." Honor, the novel's protagonist, is a happily married mom of one who is desperate to welcome another child into their young family. However, this twisty tale is perfect for those who want to be surprised, because it's full of unexpected reveals — including a huge, unexpected event that changes everything for Hope. As the family deals with surprises and second chances, an unexpected decision from Tom means old and new love end up coming head-to-head, and things could go either way.
Belletrist announced the fictional romance pick via Instagram, writing, "'Finding Grace' is a sweeping love story that explores the price of a new beginning, how the ghosts of our past shape our future, and whether redemption can be found in the wreckage of what we've lost." The new novel was released in July 2025, but has been seriously heating up on Goodreads. From 9,651 ratings at the time of writing, the book has an average score of 3.90 stars out of five.
Jenna Bush Hager's Read With Jenna Book Club — Buckeye by Patrick Ryan
Notorious book lover Jenna Bush Hager confirmed Read With Jenna's September 2025 choice on "Today," on September 2, 2025, revealing Patrick Ryan's historical fiction novel "Buckeye." "[It's] an unforgettable debut novel you won't want to miss!" Read With Jenna wrote on Instagram. Bush Hager boldly declared on the NBC morning show, "This may be one of my favorite books I've read in the last decade. 'Buckeye' is one of those once-in-a-decade novels whose story and characters will stay with you forever." And that's high praise indeed, considering Bush Hager's Summer 2025 reading list was full of hit books.
The novel tells the story of WWII lovers Cal Jenkins and Margaret Salt. Though that may sound sweet, there's a wrench in the works because both are married to other people. In the 20th century, their secret tryst is uncovered and has a profound impact on their families. Their relatives are forced to come to terms with things not being as they seemed and ponder if they really knew Cal and Margaret. Despite being released mere days before Bush Hager chose it as her September pick, "Buckeye" is riding high with 4.48 stars on Goodreads out of 308 ratings. It's a solid pick for those who want a non-traditional love story that'll make you think.
Natalie Portman's Nat's Book Club — No Straight Road Takes You There by Rebecca Solnit
Rebecca Solnit's collection of feminist essays, "No Straight Road Takes You There: Essays for Uneven Terrain," is Natalie Portman's must-read book for September 2025. The "Black Swan" actor shared a photo of herself reading the philosophical collection on Nat's Book Club's Instagram, writing, "An antidote to political paralysis, our September pick articulates a path forward, encouraging us to create new ideas of what's possible and acceptable. Thank you as always for writing, Rebecca Solnit."
Released in May 2025, the timely book is a follow-up to Solnit's "Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities" — but that doesn't necessarily mean you need to read the first collection to enjoy the second. This thought-provoking pick features a fresh collection of essays about significant issues the world is facing today. The astute Solnit shines the spotlight on a wide range of important topics close to her heart, from women's rights to climate change to political strife. With 466 ratings at the time of writing, the book has a rating of 4.24 stars on Goodreads.
