The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
Sangu Mandanna's "A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping" was chosen as one of the upcoming fantasy romance books we couldn't wait for 2025, but before that, there was her very first novel. "The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches" was given a thumbs up by author Emily Henry, who said, "This is one of my coziest reads of the last year, and I find myself thinking about its enchanted setting all the time."
Mika Moon keeps to herself and keeps her magical powers hidden, living quietly to avoid drawing attention. That all changes when she receives an invitation that leads her to Nowhere House, a mysterious place for young witches learning how to use their powers. Surrounded by magic, secrets, and new faces, Mika discovers parts of herself she's never known. Among the faces of Nowhere House is a charming and witty librarian, and the two spark an unexpected connection.
During an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Mandanna explained she wanted to "write a cozy, funny, romantic story about magic and witches that would remind me of old favorites." She also appreciated the chance to craft a story that reflected her identity while showcasing diverse voices that better represented today's world. This fall, join Mika on her journey full of magic, self-discovery, and the thrilling beginnings of love.
Go Hex Yourself by Jessica Clare
People either love or hate this pick. But tellingly, bestselling author Ali Hazelwood (whose book "The Love Hypothesis" taught us a big love lesson) is among those who love it. Hazelwood described Jessica Clare's "Go Hex Yourself" (via Goodreads) as "one of those books: the ones you read even though you should be getting ready for work; the ones you cannot help telling your friends about; the ones that make you giggle out loud on the bus; the ones that are so addictively charming, engaging, cinematic, you just cross your fingers and hope someone will turn them into a movie."
Life as a modern witch isn't the easiest, especially when your magic doesn't always go as planned. Between magical mishaps, secret spells gone awry, and a slow-burning romance with the most unexpected guy, Reggie Johnson quickly learns that life, and falling in love, is just as unpredictable as her magic. If you're searching for a no-frills, easy-to-read, enemies to lovers romance about a spunky witch and an arrogant warlock, "Go Hex Yourself" is the book for your fall TBR.
Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen
Along with "The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches," "Garden Spells" is one of the coziest witchy romance books you'll likely come across. It's the first book of the Waverly Family series, and it was also a New York Times bestseller. This is an enchanting story that follows the Waverly sisters and their life journey. It weaves together the perfect blend of romance, family secrets, and a touch of magic.
The Waverlys have always been a little different from everyone else. With magical gifts and a garden full of secrets, no one could possibly think they're an ordinary family. Still, Claire Waverly's life in her North Carolina hometown is peaceful until Claire's sister Sydney shows up with a young daughter. Claire is surprised, to say the least, and Sydney's return reopens the oldest wounds. In this great family saga, the two sisters try to heal together while reckoning with their family's legacy.
Thousands of readers who gave this book 5 stars felt this book was magical. One reviewer described it as the perfect read when you need a little magic in your life, adding, "The women of the story are soooo relatable in their unique gifts, personalities, and struggles. The relationships between them are poignant, sweet, and clear. And the love interests are exactly what every woman hopes for."
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
"A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness is perhaps our most serious pick, but it's perfect for readers looking for a more layered, character-driven witchy romance. The novel started with the author's desire to explore a world where humans lived alongside magic and the supernatural. "Six weeks later my imaginary people were talking to each other and walking around the city of Oxford, going to their jobs," Harkness said in an interview with her alma mater Mount Holyoke College. "I came out of my office and thought, 'Oh my god, I think I'm writing a novel!'"
When the author isn't writing or doing book tours, she's teaching history at the University of Southern California. Harkness brought her world to life by focusing on characters who feel real and vivid as they navigate an imaginary world. The main character, Diana Bishop, is both a witch and a scholar. Keen to keep her magical heritage under wraps, her life changes when she comes across a manuscript that pulls her into a hidden world teeming with other witches, vampires, and long-buried secrets.
Along the way, she crosses paths with Matthew Clairmont, a vampire who challenges her at every turn. But to Diana's surprise, he's not as bad as she thought, and their bond deepens. Now, Diana must navigate her newfound feelings amidst unexpected dangers. Believe us when we say Harkness's book is beyond impressive — so impressive it maintains a 4.5-star rating with more than 50,000 reviews on Amazon. This enchanting adventure is perfect for fall.
The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec
"The Witch's Heart" is Genevieve Gornichec's love letter to Norse mythology, bringing to life the story of little-known figure Angrboda. Gornichec's passion for Norse mythology began in college, and she drafted the first version of the book while writing a term paper on Angrboda. Loki, however, was her favorite character to write, she shared.
With Angrboda's powers weakened after she is cast out for defying Odin, she starts over with the trickster god Loki, who surprisingly captures her heart. Now, they're raising three children, each remarkable in their own way, each with unpredictable destinies. Life seems to be perfect for Angrboda until her visions of the future return, and she realizes peril is much closer than she ever imagined. Now, the witch must decide whether to follow the path set for her family or take matters into her own hands to protect the life she's fought so hard to build.
Readers loved Gornichec's interpretation of Norse mythology, with the book drawing some comparisons to "Circe," by Madeline Miller, one of Chelsea Handler's favorite books. One wrote (via Goodreads), "I really really loved this story that reimagines Norse Mythology in a beautiful yet approachable way. I didn't want to put this one down and even got a little sad when it was over."
How we came up with this list
For this witchy romance list, we wanted to highlight books that blend magic, mystery, and lots of love. And of course, the romance needed to be just as enchanting as the spellwork these witches brew. The titles on this list feature witches on some kind of journey, whether it's one of self-discovery or a spicy forbidden romance, navigating connections and finding sparks in unexpected places.
Once we had a shortlist of titles with potential, we examined the ratings and reviews. Witchy romance might sound niche, but the genre actually has a devoted following, so finding detailed reviews for our picks wasn't difficult. Thanks to the reviews, we were able to narrow the list further, looking specifically for titles that received a 4-star rating or higher from at least 40% of reviewers. We hope you'll enjoy this list of witchy romance reads and add them to your fall reading list.
