4 Celeb Couples Who Have Laughed Off Divorce Rumors (As If It's Our Business)

Being in the public eye isn't for everyone. When you're a celebrity, your life is constantly being scrutinized, and even when you think you've done something positive and impactful, there's always a group of haters waiting to rain on your parade. While we shouldn't waste too much energy on the goings-on of celebs, we do need to take a step back and acknowledge that they're human, just like us.

One of the ways our culture tries to tear celebrities down is to assume their marriages are constantly on the brink of divorce. Somewhere along the line, it became standard practice among tabloids to automatically assume that famous people can't be happy in their marriages, and that all of them are just one petty argument away from an epic post-divorce glow-up. While the divorce rate for first marriages in the US is between 40% and 50%, that doesn't automatically mean that every celebrity couple is going to be a statistic. In fact, some celebrity marriages can teach us a thing or two about making it work for the long haul. For example, our childless-by-choice queen Dolly Parton has been married to Carl Dean for a whopping 59 years — that's impressive, and not just by Hollywood standards.

While celebrities may not be able to completely shut down divorce rumors, they can laugh them off. After all, laughing is far better than crying over it. Here are some celebrities who gave divorce rumors a proper chuckle.

Michelle and Barack Obama

From the moment President Barack Obama decided to run for office and the world was introduced to him and Michelle on a global scale, something became clear: these two are very much in love. Unlike other politicians, the Obamas never steered away from showing their affections for one another, so much so that the fact that anyone would even think for a hot second these two were on the brink of divorce is shocking. Michelle and Barack have been married since 1992 and still flirt with each other — not exactly fodder for divorce rumors.

But because they are so high-profile, they're a prime target for senseless gossip. Although there have always been assumptions about their marriage, the rumors gained more traction when Michelle didn't accompany Barack to several events at which Trump was present in early 2025. Considering Michelle has unlearned her people-pleasing behavior, her choice to avoid Trump makes perfect sense.

In true Obama form, the two addressed the rumors on Michelle's podcast, "IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson." When Barack sat down at the table, he said with a laugh, via CNN, "She took me back! It was touch and go for a while," clearly making fun of the noise that had been circulating. Robinson then thanked the two for being in the same room together, to which Michelle responded, "I know, because when we aren't, folks think we're divorced." These two are pros at shutting down divorce rumors.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

When you marry into the British royal family, you either need thick skin or have plans to grow some. If there's anything to take from the marriage of Prince Charles and the gorgeous, rule-breaking icon Princess Diana, it's that you will live your life under scrutiny and even possibly die trying to escape it. It's definitely not easy to navigate.

Like Diana, Meghan Markle has learned firsthand the difficulties that come with being part of the royal family, so much so that she and Prince Harry moved to California to escape it all. While they were able to untether themselves from living under the thumb of such an archaic institution, that hasn't relieved them from the rumor mill's line of fire. After all, Meghan and Harry appear to be very much in love, and critics love trying to tear happiness down.

In April 2025, Meghan Markle did her best to throw a wrench in assumptions that she and Harry are headed for divorce. When Jamie Kern Lima asked Markle on her eponymous podcast if she thought she'd be married to Harry forever, Markle responded with a resounding, "Yes!" Markle went on to talk about Harry's looks, saying, "He's also a fox, if you haven't noticed ... My husband's very, very handsome. But his heart is even more beautiful." Granted, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but good for Markle for taking the light-hearted route instead of playing into the rumors.

Hailey and Justin Bieber

When Justin and Hailey Bieber tied the knot in November 2018 at the ages of 24 and 21, many assumed it wouldn't last. After all, statistically, those who marry in their early 20s are more likely to divorce than those who marry in their 30s or older, per Psychology Today. However, contrary to statistics, the Biebers seem to be going strong, welcoming their first child in August 2024.

While one never knows for sure what's going on in someone else's marriage, there have been red flags in Hailey and Justin Bieber's relationship that have helped the divorce rumors along. Their solution? Finding the humor in the gossip. "They laugh at the constant divorce rumors," an insider told People in November 2024. "It's annoying but just noise." But it wasn't always a laughing matter for the couple.

"People have made me feel so bad about my relationship since day one. 'Oh, they're falling apart. They hate each other. They're getting divorced.' It's like people don't want to believe that we're happy," Hailey told W Magazine in July 2024. "I used to try to act like it hurts less and less. I've tried to think that you get used to it at a certain point, that this is what's going to be said and this is how people are going to be. But I realize that it doesn't actually ever hurt any less." So while the pain is there, at least they're laughing at the absurdity.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds haven't been having the best few years. Not only was Lively's 2024 film, "It Ends With Us," shrouded in controversy from pretty much every angle, but the two were countersued by Justin Baldoni after Lively sued him for alleged sexual harassment. There are also enough red flags in Lively's friendship with Taylor Swift to suggest their relationship is on the fritz, plus rumors about Blake and Ryan's marriage being headed to divorce court won't stop swirling. If all this wasn't enough, Lively is still convinced she doesn't need a stylist, despite being in very desperate need of one.

But gossip about their marriage is nothing new for the couple. In 2018, after IBTimes tweeted, "Deadpool Ryan Reynolds and wife Blake Lively struggling to spend 'quality time," Reynolds decided to have fun with the accusation. Not only did he retweet the headline, but responded, "I wish. I could use a little 'me time.'" More recently, Lively replied to a fan on her Instagram who suggested she post more photos of herself with Reynolds due to divorce rumors with, "haha they wish [laughing emoji]," via Cosmopolitan. So, whether or not the rumors are true, the point is these two aren't playing that game and would rather laugh it all off instead.
