Though Kaley Cuoco may be most famous with long, warm, blond locks, she's rocked more shades and cuts than you might think. In fact, her hair transformation is as varied as Cuoco's stunning style transformation. And we're not just talking a trim and a few highlights every now and then, as "The Flight Attendant" actor isn't afraid to try the unexpected. "Just blink and it might be blue or something. I always do something stupid to it. It's hair! It grows back," she told Us Weekly.
While playing Penny on the hugely popular CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" from 2007 until 2019, Cuoco explained she liked to alter her look to feel more like herself in between shooting. "It's very important for me to change my look after wrapping each season," she wrote in a since deleted Instagram post (via E! News). "I love playing Penny, but it's good for me to bring it back to Kaley," she added. And she's also rocked some equally head-turning looks both before and after landing the role of a lifetime.
2002: We met Kaley Cuoco with blond, long longs and super chunky highlights
When we were first introduced to Kaley Cuoco in 2002, she had the ultimate, trendy girl next door look. At the ABC Summer Press Tour All-Star Party, she wore her long, warm, blond hair straight and down with distinctive lowlights at the back. Her shiny tresses were layered too, which was a big trend Y2K trend.
That same year, the teenage "8 Simple Rules" star hopped on another huge trend of the time when she sported very chunky, unblended highlights to an ABC Primetime Preview Weekend event. Her look was a mix of light blond and strawberry blond shades, which helped warm her complexion and kept her looking fun and youthful. Chunky highlights became the hair trend of the moment again in 2024, but were even bigger in the'90s and early '00s when everyone from Geri Horner (aka Ginger Spice) to Kelly Clarkson rocked the divisive look.
2011: The star experimented with dark ends
Now a household name thanks to "The Big Bang Theory," we saw Kaley Cuoco start to experiment with her hair more in 2011. At the "A Night At Sardi's" fundraiser and awards dinner, she wore her hair in glamorous waves with plenty of volume that matched her new A-List status. Her dirty blond locks weren't quite as bright as her signature shade, which seemingly represented her more mature side, as she turned 26 that year. Her hair looked extra full thanks to her on-trend curtain bangs though and she seemingly had a little help from extensions. She also did something unexpected at the ends, as her mane faded into toffee brown shade.
The California native rocked a similar look at the Grammys that year, but seemingly without the XL extensions. That time, her 'do was a little sleeker, as she wore straight locks with a center part in flattering layers. Though the style may have been considered a little simple for such a prestigious red carpet event, the ombre effect added a quirky edge without her needing to spend too much time styling her locks.
2014: Kaley Cuoco chopped off her locks -- and soon regretted it
In 2014, Kaley Cuoco took a stunning leap from long to short hair. She cut off several inches for a dramatic pixie cut and claimed on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" that year, "I have wanted to do this for years." She added as she ran her hands through it, "Oh my God. I love this cut."
The star elaborated on the move in the book "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit" a few years later, but shared a different take on how she really felt. She claimed she cut it for the movie "Burning Bondhi," but didn't tell anyone who worked on "The Big Bang Theory" beforehand. "We were heading into our eighth season and something needed to shake up. I was bored and sick of the hair," she shared. But Cuoco soon found it wasn't as convenient as she originally thought and regretted her decision. "I thought I was cutting off all this time, because I hated going in and getting ready. That's why I was wearing my hair up so much in season six and seven. So then I cut it and it ended up being more work because it wasn't easy to style," she said.
It may not have been the easiest, but Cuoco's hair team did manage to style her choppy 'do. At "The Wedding Ringer" premiere early that year, the actor wore a short, light blond, hairdo that was tousled for an edgy, cool look. At the 2013 Emmys later in the year though, her hair was a little longer, which gave her a little more scope for styling. Cuoco stunned with her golden blond tresses more uniform, with sideswept bangs pushed the opposite way.
2015: She brought the fun with different colors and styles while growing out her pixie cut
Kaley Cuoco appeared to be growing out her short hair in summer 2015 — and had some fun doing it. At the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards, she walked the red carpet with sideswept bangs dyed an icy, light blond hue. She pushed her growing bangs behind her ears and smoothed down her strands for a chic and modern vibe that finished at the nape of her neck. In a since deleted Instagram upload shared a few weeks earlier, Cuoco had even dyed her brows pink, but that appeared to have faded before she made it to the red carpet.
The pink strands were gone, and so was the super short pixie cut, by the end of the year, though. When the "Based on a True Story" actor walked the red carpet at the All-Star Dog Rescue Celebration event, her mane was back to her signature light blond. There was a twist though, as her dark roots were showing. Her tresses were far longer than we'd seen in a while, as her hair had grown several inches to bob length. Cuoco appeared to be going for a loose, unkempt look, as she wavy locks had plenty of texture without a uniform curl.
The following year though, she was ready for more length again. "Last year I chopped it all off- this year I'm doing the opposite. With the extension master @faye.woods .... Stay tuned!" she captioned a since removed 2016 Instagram photo (via E! News). The snap showed her having long extensions installed.
2023: Kaley Cuoco straddled the line between blond and brunette
Kaley Cuoco was pregnant with her and her partner Tom Pelphrey's first child in 2023, but that wasn't the only drastic change in her life. The star ditched her signature blond locks on the Golden Globes red carpet as she proudly showed off her baby bump. She wore her much darker tresses in a sophisticated up-to with wispy bangs that were longer on the side to frame her face. Her hairstylist Christine Symonds described the look as "modern French twist [on classic curtain bangs]." Symonds, who also created Cuoco's pixie cut, added to Us Weekly, "The dress was ethereal and had the most beautiful bows and jewels on the straps, so we knew we wanted the hair up to not distract from the simple elegance of the dress."
Later that year though, the "Role Play" star leaned back into blond when she began sporting caramel highlights in her chest-length tresses. The actor's warm locks complimented her skin tone at the "Based On A True Story" premiere and marked a fun and flattering way to represent a new era in her life. The beauty continued rocking brond locks for a while, as she still had the shade at the "Government Cheese" premiere in spring 2025.
