Demi Lovato Looks So Different Without Hair Extensions

Demi Lovato has undergone a seriously drastic transformation since she shot to fame on the Disney Channel, and so has her hair, as she's a celeb who has taken the leap from long to short hair multiple times. Lovato's repeatedly used extensions to update and elevate her look, often going to great lengths (literally) to get them. In fact, she once spent hours in the salon while her stylist, Amber Maynard Bolt, installed 15-inch pieces. "[The extensions] are individually attached to small amounts of hair to create a more natural movement," Maynard Bolt told People. "It took about six hours to build up her look to make it most realistic."

With how often we'd gotten used to seeing the "Heart Attack" singer in long tresses, it makes since that she's a celeb who is basically unrecognizable without hair extensions. That was evident in 2021, when she showed off a drastic, very short new 'do on Instagram — and it was obvious all of it was natural.

The singer and actor's then-new 'do was just visible under her hat. Based on the photo, it appears that she had buzzed sides and aded edgy, choppy bangs. Fans loved seeing the star ditch her extensions and try something new, as one commented, "So beautiful! I wish I could pull that hairstyle off!" Another wrote, "This [pixie] cut looks gorgeous on u."

2021 is not the only time Lovato has looked totally different while extension-free, though. In 2018, we saw the "Sorry Not Sorry" singer proudly remove her makeup and her ultra long, clip-in tresses as part of Vogue's "Unfiltered: A Pop Star Removes Their Makeup" series on YouTube. After the beauty unclipped the extra hair, her glossy, black mane went from booty-length to her shoulders. It also appeared less voluminous, revealing wispy ends that only made her more relatable. Speaking to Vogue about going au natural in front of the camera, Lovato explained, "I love doing my hair; I have extensions, but there's a time and a place for everything, and natural beauty needs to be celebrated."

She took that mantra seriously, as she avoided a celeb hair extension fail that made us cringe by removing them during a Hawaiian vacation in 2024. The hitmaker posed with a wet, chin-length bob pushed to her right side and appeared to be sporting her natural texture in a stunning Instagram selfie.

When it's time to experiment with extensions though, Lovato has tried a few different brands. The "Sonny With A Chance" star has had Great Lengths' semi-permanent extensions attached to her natural locks and has also tried out Philocaly's CW Collection Seamless Clip-Ins in the color Espresso Noir. In 2014, she even launched her own hair extensions line with Secret Color, which included hair pieces in various fun and bright colors.
