Does Katy Perry Wear Wigs? The Secret Behind Her Ever-Changing Hair
Katy Perry has never been a "Dark Horse" regarding hair transformations. She has consistently wowed with bold look after bold look, regularly changing the length and color of her locks to match her mood. We've seen her with a bright blue bob, a long, pink mane, a dark green 'do, and almost every other hue and style out there. But did you know not all those daring looks were created using her own hair? News flash: Katy Perry wears wigs. Like many other celebs who were open and honest about wearing wigs, she's copped to using hairpieces multiple times.
Perry confirmed she had a wig on in April 2024, after sporting a dark black bob during her judging stint on "American Idol." "People have really strong feelings about my hair. For years, they have," she told E! News, admitting her short coiffre wasn't her real hair. We wouldn't have known though, because the tousled, professional wig looked legit (a few celebrity wig-wearers should take notes).
She also opened up about concealing her hair in an Instagram video. Among photos and a video showing her with the same choppy cut, Perry told her followers, "You guys had a lot of strong feelings about my haircut. Let's see that energy for KP6, because this is just a wig."
Katy Perry once removed her wig on camera
Katy Perry tends to hide her natural hair. In September 2024, she hit the red carpet looking glam with Orlando Bloom for the premiere of his movie, "The Cut," rocking baby bangs and plenty of eyeliner. After the event, Perry revealed the truth about her look, posting photos and videos from the event on Instagram, including a clip that showed her ripping off her wig as a stunned Bloom looked on. "This bang isn't real, but my love for you is," she joked.
That was nothing compared to the many (many, many) wigs she wore on stage in 2019, though. Perry's head was adorned with 76 hairpieces for her performance on that year's "American Idol" finale and she shared a photo to Instagram showing the various locks of blond hair being assembled, with some even strewn across the floor.
"Tonight's #AmericanIdol finale is not just WIG — it's 76 wigs (and a little bit of fringe)," she captioned the upload. Artist Iggy Rosales, who created the larger-than-life look, told Paper, "With something of this scale, it becomes less of a hairstyle and more of a sculpture. The idea was that Katy would start off completely submerged within the giant wig, and mid-performance would reveal another hairstyle underneath." Though we wouldn't recommend donning that many wigs, Perry certainly makes a case for taking risks without the actualy risk.
