The Once-Popular Denim Trend That's Totally Outdated In 2025
As styles move in a polished and minimal direction, denim trends are moving away from hard-to-wear styles that feel less elegant and versatile. First on the chopping block? Ripped jeans. These distressed styles are über-casual, which leaves fewer opportunities to rewear them.
In the past, well-worn jeans were more of an indicator of quality rather than a style, so designers started intentionally destroying their high-quality denim in the '70s. By the '90s, they had mainstream appeal, popularized by grunge music and embraced by even the most elegant, minimal brands, like Calvin Klein. Since then, distressed jeans have been awarded their own denim category. And while many put away their tattered trousers during the '10s, these styles were revived during the pandemic, when the fashion pendulum swung back toward casual.
Buying pre-distressed denim is historically a little controversial, and people have long been willing to shell out extra money for rips that look more authentic. But this oddly fussy approach to looking laidback feels out of step with current styles, which foreground effortless elegance.
Instead, opt for timeless denim looks
As you set your distressed denim aside, shift your sights to tailored styles that are versatile and fresh. Wide leg jeans, denim skirts, and even denim-on-denim are among the denim trends you'll be seeing everywhere in 2025. Ultra-high-rise jeans are outdated, but it's a great time to experiment with the low-rise styles that are having their revival.
Remember: Classic doesn't mean boring, and wearability doesn't mean sacrificing fun. "We're seeing a blend of nostalgia and innovation," said Shopbop's senior fashion director, Caroline Maguire, in an interview with Refinery29. "While some trends nod to the past with vintage-inspired washes and silhouettes, others embrace modern, statement-making details that feel entirely fresh."
So, look for styles that inject a retro vibe, like '70s-inspired flared jeans that can be styled for any occasion. Or opt for a little maximalist bling, like bedazzled pockets. The key is focusing on iconic styles with elevated details, to ensure that these foundational wardrobe pieces can be worn again and again.
