Reese's Book Club's Summer 2025 YA Pick Was Written By A Familiar Hollywood Face
Reese Witherspoon launched her book club in 2017, but it wasn't until 2020 that she began sharing her Young Adult picks for the summer. For 2025, "Stuck Up and Stupid" — a modern take on Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" – made it on to the list, and you may be surprised to learn that it was written by the 2024 "Mean Girls" star, Angourie Rice, and her mom, Kate Rice. Angourie came up with the idea for the book in 2020 after reading the original version and wanted her mom to retell the story, per The Hollywood Reporter. Kate then suggested that they write the novel together, with the two adding their own personal touches to the classic. "We chose to very deliberately discern it in worlds that we knew intimately. The world where most of the book is set is based on the beach community that we go to every summer and then the Hollywood stuff is based on our experiences that we've had," Kate told the publication.
Writing "Stuck Up and Stupid" was a bonding moment for the mother-daughter duo, as Angourie told USA Today, "It's coming together to create this thing as two creative people who are being creative and who tell stories. And that's really cool to sort of, I guess, meet each other as artists." Angourie's not the only famous face in the family, as Kate has a pretty impressive resume herself, so it's no surprise that the award-winning writer helped make "Stuck Up and Stupid" a hit with readers.
Angourie Rice got her love of writing from her mother
With a mom as a playwright who has received the Australian Writers Guild Award, it's clear Angourie Rice inherited Kate Rice's knack for storytelling. "Kate is a writer and has been writing for a long time. I grew up just admiring that and loving writing as well, but obviously ended up going in the performing arts route," Angourie told People. Despite being an award-winning writer, going the novel route was unfamiliar to Kate, so both she and Angourie had a learning curve. " I'd never written a novel, and neither had she, so we were exploring that together," the "Mare of Easttown" actor shared.
Readers were excited to see Angourie and Kate's book on Reese Witherspoon's list for summer 2025, and we think a young Elle Woods would definitely have it on her reading list. "We can't wait for you to start our Summer YA Pick 'Stuck Up and Stupid' by @angourierice & @katericewriter. "Hope books like this will encourage women to live for their dreams and not to put them aside," a fan replied. Another raved, "[It's] so good." If you're looking for a beach read from Reese's Book Club, "Stuck Up and Stupid" is a great choice for a lighthearted take on a favorite classic book club read.
