Does Gwen Stefani Wear Wigs? What She's Said About Her Ever-Changing Hair
Gwen Stefani is notorious for trying new, elaborate hairstyles. Though platinum locks are her signature — even though, shocker, Stefani isn't a natural blond — she's tried a range of daring colors and cuts. Which has us wondering: Does she wear wigs? The answer is yes.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2015, Stefani copped to being a fan of a hairpiece or two. "Nothing here is me. Everything is fake," she quipped. When asked what her natural hair looks like, she teased, "Um, who knows? I haven't seen it since ninth grade." Stefani's hairstylist Danilo Dixon revealed he dyes her hair weekly to keep it light blond. "We color her hair every Monday, before we film 'The Voice.' Gwen's an Italian girl with wavy brown hair — if you look at the video for 'Cool,' we did her in her natural shade, maybe a little darker — so I developed a high lift formula for her," he told Refinery29.
But Stefani clearly still opts for wigs sometimes, just like Kiera Knightly, possibly to protect her natural tresses from damage. In 2022, Stefani rocked a super long, sleek, straight, black 'do with blunt bangs on "The Voice," which was clearly wasn't her own hair because she was back to blond with black dip-dye ends a couple of days later. The California native has even been known to wear wigs when she's not trying different colors. During a 2024 episode of "The Voice," she sported a wavy, chest-length blond 'do with bangs. This was clearly a wig too, since the bangs didn't stick around and it sat further forward than her natural hairline.
Gwen Stefani uses hair extensions, too
When Gwen Stefani isn't wearing wigs, she enhances her natural hair using extensions. Stefani is close with Amanda Craig, co-owner of the Leigh, Edwards & Company salon, and hairstylist to her husband Blake Shelton. Craig has her own line of clip-ins that Stefani uses, with the company confirming on Instagram that the "Don't Speak" hitmaker has worn the LEC Dream Hair Clip-Ins.
The star has been very open about how much she loves expressing herself via her appearance — even if a few of Stefani's outfits hit the wrong note. "I definitely look back at certain moments and don't think I look good ... but I know why! I didn't have a hair stylist, I did all my own makeup, and I was going to the local fabric store for all of my outfits," she told Teen Vogue.
Stefani doesn't sport her over-the-top styles for anyone but her, she added. "I've always loved fashion — it's a reflection of your personality. Even if no one was looking, I'd still be wearing the same things," she said. Stefani clearly has no plans to stop playing with wigs and extensions, and frankly, why should she?
