A skirt can be a cute and easy upgrade to your favorite top, giving your 'fit more oomph than standard jeans. Plus, when the weather is warmer, nothing beats that light breezy feeling against your legs. However, in the same way certain accessories have become outdated for 2025, there are several skirt looks that have been left to fashion seasons past.
While statement skirts sizzled as the go-to trend of summer 2024, things have changed drastically for 2025. "The biggest shift is that it's all about the silhouette," Amanda Vitale, style expert and founder of The Aesthetic Edge, exclusively told Women.com. "We are seeing skirts that are shorter, slinkier, and styled for minimalism," she added, noting, "Less is suddenly so much more, which we are also seeing with makeup and nails. It's across the board." So, to get up-to-date, we asked Vitale to break down the specific styles to relegate from your wardrobe and what to wear instead to make 2025 your trendiest skirt year yet.
The traditional tennis skirt is officially out
Though we adored when Zendaya nailed the tenniscore trend during the 2024 "Challengers" frenzy, we've since moved on. According to Amanda Vitale, the sporty, pleated take on the tennis skirt is outdated and better left on the court in 2025. That's because while the athleisure aesthetic is still popular, we're rocking it via our skirts in more understated ways. "We are now wearing A-lines or mesh-panel miniskirts that still say athleisure but in a more demure way," Vitale said.
Swap the classic tennis skirt for the chicer Betaven A-Line Golf Skirt with Shorts (the built-in shorts will offer more versatility and coverage if you're getting sporty). The CRZ YOGA High Waisted Golf Skirt will also give the chic A-Line aesthetic and comes in spring 2025's trendiest color, as the Dark Lavender Purple shade gives us wisteria vibes.
Denim maxi skirts have been replaced by miniskirts
As excited as we were to give the denim maxi skirt a second chance in 2023, that renaissance is officially over. Throwback denim maxis were officially declared out last year, and Vitale doubled down on ditching the calf-grazing, vintage look for 2025. "This is too heavy to align with 2025's breezy vibe," she explained. "We are moving away from denim maxis and voluminous styles to sleek looks that have a '90s edge."
But that doesn't mean all denim skirts are outdated. In fact, it's quite the opposite. "[In 2025,] we are wearing denim mini and micro skirts with our tank tops and trainers," Vitale shared. Embellished denim is trendy for summer 2025 too, so pull out your sparkly pieces to be truly on trend. The likes of Generic's Rhinestone Embellished Denim Skirt or the Stretch Washed Vintage Jean Skirt Fringed from Just Quella will provide that '90s edge with a modern twist.
Tiered boho skirts are no longer hot
Though the previously outdated boho vibe as a whole is still a trend for 2025, the tiered skirts so heavily associated with the aesthetic have been phased out. That's because they were everywhere when the boho vibe was last huge in the '00s, so wearing one this time around will instantly date your look. To make the vibe more 2025, Amanda Vitale recommended trying something different via slinkier skirts.
"In summer 2025 we will be wearing sheer slip skirts, bias cuts, or incorporating an unexpected texture such as mesh or satin," Vitale told us. That's music to our ears, as these floaty, comfortable skirts are flattering on a wide range of different body types. The Skrtimory Satin Mini Skirt offers the unexpected texture that's popular right now, while the Satin Midi Skirt from Kleidungly in #2-yellow will put you in the on-trend color of spring/summer 2025, butter yellow.
