There's one question we can't stop asking ourselves every time we settle in for a "Yellowstone" re-run. Is Beth Dutton wearing a wig? The character's thick, strawberry blond tresses catch our eye every time she's on screen, but it's hard to tell if it's natural or if Dutton has a little help from a wig or hair pieces. To get answers, we spoke exclusively to Amber Renee, a makeup artist, hair and wig expert, and CEO of Arenee Lashes and Cosmetics, who shared why she thinks we're not seeing the natural locks of the gorgeous Yellowstone actor Kelly Reilly.

"There's something undeniably striking about Beth's hair. It's voluminous, ruggedly tousled, and styled with a sort of unpolished glamour that suits the wild Montana setting perfectly," Renee explained, but she noted there are times Beth's tresses don't quite fall naturally. She also pointed out that the character's hair seems abnormally stiff and thick around her crown. "The strands seem to clump together just a little more than you might expect from natural hair — particularly in a relaxed, casual setting. These are subtle signs that could suggest the use of a wig or some kind of hair enhancement," she said. "The hair looks a little too perfectly 'messy,' a little too consistently dramatic," she added.

Beth's hair looks different to the redder tresses Reilly shows on Instagram and red carpets too, also pointing to the character's locks being a wig. "Reilly's hair is noticeably finer, with a softer, sleeker texture. She has a far more natural, almost ethereal look — less teased, less bombshell," Renee said. "The texture, thickness, and even the way her natural hair sits against her scalp are markedly different from Beth's signature mane."

Beth Dutton's hairstyles had a lot of thought behind them

If Kelly Reilly really is wearing a wig or other hair accessories, such as extensions, in "Yellowstone," it makes sense why the hair and makeup team would choose not to use her natural locks. "Beth Dutton is a woman with hard edges and deep wounds, and everything about her appearance, including her hair, serves that storytelling," Amber Renee explained. Many TV and movie sets opt for wigs as they can be styled in a specific way, often without the actor needing to being on set. Equally, several celebrities have been open and honest about wearing wigs to avoid damaging their own hair.

Speaking to Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, "Yellowstone"'s department head hair/designer Tim Muir explained he had very specific ideas for Beth's hairstyles and each look was created to represent how the character was feeling. "They are as calculated as she is in everything that she does. From a power updo in a business suit, to soft and vulnerable hair style with her husband, to a wild and wavy mane when no rules apply," he said, confirming Reilly's co-star Kelsey Asbille, the Monica actor who's equally stunning in real life, wore a wig piece with her real hair for some scenes. Muir also shared the products he used to get Beth's looks, including Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo, Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, and Bumble and Bumble Sumoclay Matte Texture Clay.

But, wig or otherwise, what's most important is that Beth's hair allowed the actor to shine. "Whether it's a full wig or clever styling tricks, what matters most is how seamlessly Reilly disappears into Beth's fierce, firebrand persona — hair and all," Renee said.
