But do they really work?

Crystals are becoming a popular tool used by many to aid them throughout their life.

From using them to attract love to keeping them with you for protection, these healing gems can be incredibly beneficial in helping one achieve their goals.

It almost feels as though they can be used for anything, including mental illnesses.

We reached out to Samantha Fey, a crystal expert and intuitive medium, to get an expert's opinion on the matter. She told us how crystals can work to alleviate the mental illness and the best ones for depression.

Can Crystals Help With Depression?

Crystals have been present since the dawn of time, but it was a French physicist who discovered their full potential.

"The French physicist Pierre Curie discovered that if you put pressure on a crystal, it produces electricity," Samantha notes. "This is called the piezoelectric effect and is why today crystals are used in watches, computer chips, iPhones, and TVs. The structure of a crystal grows in perfect harmony, whereas we tend to bend and sway with the energies of those around us. The belief is that working with crystals helps bring our energy into alignment. If a crystal can help a watch keep time or a computer store energy, then the crystal can help us on our road to healing."

Since then, crystals have been used by all sorts of people to help alleviate their various ailments. But can they work for depression? According to Samantha, absolutely.

"Crystals can receive, hold, direct, project, and reflect light, so it makes sense that they could help us with depression," she says. "When we are feeling sad, the light seems far away. Saint John called these times a 'dark night of the soul.' If a crystal has been proven to hold and emanate light and has been witnessed to help us align our energy, it's reasonable to assume they can help us to also take in more light and help alleviate our depression. Our body emits an electromagnetic field which further shows that the piezoelectric effect of crystals can help us feel more energetic."

How Do You Use Crystals to Help With Depression?

There's no right way to use crystals to help with depression. From using them while you meditate or simply carrying them on you at all times, you can use these stones any which way you like.

"You can work with the crystals in a variety of ways," Samantha says. "You can hold them during meditation and ask them to absorb any sadness or anger you're holding onto. You can use them in a simple grid formation to help pull sadness from your energy. For example, write an affirmation such as 'Every day, in every way, I feel happier and more joyful.' Then place a center crystal (ideally in a pyramid or obelisk shape to direct the energy up) over this affirmation and then place the other crystals around this center one. If you feel that you hold onto pain or sadness in your body, you can place the crystals over your chakras to absorb sadness from your energy. If you're new to this and not even sure if these rocks will work, you can simply carry them around with you. It takes about 2 weeks for a crystal's energy to vibrate with ours, so give it time. But soon you should be feeling lighter."

What Are the Best Crystals for Depression?

With so many different crystals out there, it's difficult to know just which ones work for depression. Samantha was kind enough to break down the top five that do just that.

Smokey Quartz

"Easily found and very reasonably priced, smokey quartz is a great crystal to work with if you're feeling frazzled and overworked by stress and depression," she says. "Smokey quartz is the national gemstone of Scotland and has been revered through the ages by the Druids as a stone of power. It's one of the best stones to hold for grounding your energy when you feel overwhelmed by worries and anxiety. It works hard to channel excess energy down your chakras and out into the ground, leaving you only with the positive energy you need. This calming stone removes fear and lifts your mood. It helps you to tolerate and accept your situation while you're going through it. Smokey quartz lifts your mood and helps bring positivity into your life. Hold two pieces of smokey quartz in each hand to pull and release sadness out of your body. You can place a piece in a home or office filled with arguments to absorb tension."

Lepidolite

"This beautiful purple stone absorbs negative thoughts, especially obsessive ones, and works to open the throat, heart, third eye, and crown chakras," Samantha notes. "Called the Stone of Transition, it helps you start to see your future with hope and optimism. Lepidolite contains lithium, so it works to stabilize mood swings and bipolar disorders. Wear lepidolite to help you make good decisions with clarity and confidence. Meditate with it to absorb anxious emotions and thoughts about the past. Wear lepidolite in jewelry to help you deal with social anxiety. Emotionally, it's a very calming stone that aids sleep and balances excessive energy. It helps you to stand in your own space and speak your truth."

Tiger's Eye

"This golden brown stone combines the energy of the earth with the vibrancy of the sun to create the perfect level of vibrational healing," Samantha mentions. "It works to ground your energy while lifting your vibration to more positive thinking. It's a very protective stone that was traditionally used to ward off ill-wishes, spells, and curses. Tiger's eye works to protect your aura from taking on the negativity of those around you. Wear it when you know you're going to be in a confrontational situation or when you're going to be around a negative person, to protect you from absorbing their negative energy. Meditate with a piece of it to help you get unstuck from challenges and blocks. The golden light in this stone helps to increase your feelings of self-worth and self-love—the two best weapons against depression."

Sunstone

"Sunstone is called the Stone of Joy," Samantha says. "It carries the energy of the sun. It's a crystal of joy, happiness, success, and abundance. Sunstone reminds us to live in the moment and helps us release worries so we can be truly happy. Sunstone is excellent at helping you walk away from codependent relationships. Wearing it helps you feel more alive. It activates the solar plexus—our center of self-esteem, courage, and confidence. Place a piece by your desk at work to help you get noticed for promotion, better assignments, and leadership opportunities. Meditate with sunstone to remind yourself that you deserve happiness."

Botswana Agate

"This gentle, nurturing stone is referred to as the Sunset Stone, because it's said to help you survive those dark nights of the soul," Samantha notes. "It's an excellent stone for children or teenagers to hold onto who are sensitive to peer pressure or who have to deal with bullies at school. The bluish-gray bands of this stone provide layers of security and protection for your energy while you're going through difficult times of sadness or despair. Many crystal healers refer to it as the anti-depressant stone because of its ability to help the wearer release repressed emotions and focus on self-love and inner joy. Agates in general are known to work slowly on the body and emotions, but their effects are long lasting."
