The 10 Best Feminist Halloween Costumes
For the gal on the go!
Halloween is just around the corner and if you’re anything like me you didn’t realize that until you sat down to write that sentence. Because it’s on a Tuesday, presumably this weekend will be one of celebrations and libations. So have no fear if you’re in a pickle (easy costume idea right there), here are some feminist, or female centric, costumes to pull together.
1. Frida Kahlo
Okay you have some big shoes to fill. Not only was Frida Kahlo a feminist artist, Beyonce had a team, and millions of dollars, to help her with an amazing costume. But it's easier than it looks. Find a floral dress, throw a shawl or scarf over your shoulders, grab a flower headband from Coachella last year and you’re set. Don’t forget to add a unibrow, a-must have addition if you’re trying to personify the late Spanish artist.
2. Troop Beverly Hills
If you and your friends are crafty, then this costume is right for you. You might have a few things in your closet but for whatever you don’t have, a quick trip to Forever 21 will fix most of your costume related problems. Troop Beverly Hills, written by badass woman Margaret Oberman, tells the tale of a rich socialite who takes control of her daughters Girl Scout Troop. They camp while learning how to balance a checkbook. With stars like Shelly Long and singer Jenny Lewis, this movie is a classic.
Embrace your inner pessimist with this MTV classic! Daria peaked in popularity in the late 90s, early 2000s but she’s a staple to feminism. With her blunt honesty, and blasé personality, she’s the perfect example of not giving a fuck. If you have a best friend, she can tag along as her equally blunt and sarcastic best friend, Jane. This costume is so easy you could find most things in your closet or make a quick trip to Goodwill.
4. Liz Lemon
And if we’re on the topic of feminist icons, why not add Liz Lemon from 30 Rock? Played by the goddess, Tina Fey, Liz Lemon ran a successful television show, while taking on her coworkers responsibilities and burdens. 30 Rock just left Netflix but you can find it on Hulu and marvel at the hilarity of Liz Lemon. Throw on a pair of jeans, grab a blazer you find too matronly, and munch on a bag of Cheetos all evening. Sounds like a pretty ideal night if you ask me.
5. Selina Meyer - Veep
While we’re on the topic of hilarious women of television, change the channel on over to HBO. Veep is a political satire led by the genius Julia-Louis Dreyfus. She’s won countless Emmy awards for her work, and rightfully so. The egomaniacal, ruthless leader will do anything to achieve success, and if her male counterparts do it, then why can’t she? She might not be an everyday hero but she proves that even women are allowed to mess up. Find a suit at your local department store or look through the racks of the Salvation Army, you’re bound to find something. Chanel your inner vice president all night, by doing very little really.
6. Who You Goin' To Call?
The all-female ghostbusters were met with a lot of hostility. Starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon the remake made 229.1 million dollars at the box office. So what better way to make internet trolls angrier than dressing up as them! If anyone gives you crap, make sure to slime them. Lucky for you, these costumes are usually sold at those horrible halloween pop-up stores for much more than they are actually worth. Wear it next year as Rosie the Rivetor or a trash collector. The possibilities are endless!!!
7. Samantha Bee
The only woman hosting a late night talk show, Samantha Bee is pissed. She covers everything from Harvey Weinstein to the NFL protests. She is lovable, funny, and spicy. She wears some pretty cool outfits and slap a blonde wig on it, you’re ready to go. From The Daily Show to Full Frontal, she’s had a platform to discuss the issues important to her. Your platform can be a Halloween party with friends who disagree with you politically. Now isn’t that spooky?!
8. Big Little Lies Girl Gang
Big Little Lies was a must-read book turned into a must-see TV show. Starring America’s favorite Reese Witherspoon, and Australia’s favorite, Nicole Kidman, this show was lit!!!! The women, and mothers, range drastically from age and marital status. Each has an individual style and personality that is easily replicated through clothing. Grab a friend or go solo because these characters speak for themselves. You likely have something in your closet whether it’s Nicole’s camel color scheme, or Zoe Kravitz’s bohemian wardrobe.
9. All Female Twitter
After allegations of sexual assault and rape transpired, Harvey Weinstein fled Hollywood. Rose McGowan, an actress best known for her roles in Scream and witch drama, Charmed, went to Twitter to call out other men in Hollywood for not speaking up. Twitter suspended her account for 24 hours and she was not happy. Other actresses, and women in Hollywood, supported Rose and her activism, which resulted in a Day Without A Woman on Twitter. So dress up as a pink bird, have your phone in hand, and go to town. Just make sure you don't tweet people's private numbers.
10. Handmaid's Tale
The critically acclaimed and Emmy award-winning TV show changed Hulu forever. Adapted from Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, the story of a dystopian future felt a little too close to home for some viewers. The costumes are crucial to the plot of the drama. There’s a lot to work with and most of it is easy to make or find. A long red dress, cape, or robe will do. A structure bonnet can be easily made with string and poster paper. Or if you’d rather have more power this Hallow’s eve, dress up as the wife of Commander Waterford, Serena Joy. Similar to the Handmaid’s, the costume can be completed with one long green coat, dress, or robe. Whatever you do, make sure you’re pretty badass when you do it.
