8 Movies About Sex Addiction That'll Educate Viewers

Sex addiction is no joke. According to Recovery Ranch, "more people are addicted to sex than those who abuse prescription drugs". A lot of people joke about sex addiction; "what, like it's a bad thing?!". But, abusing sex is just as harmful as any other addiction. There's a lot to learn when it comes to sex education and abuse.

When we're confused, concerned, or detached we turn to movies. They can be therapeutic and cathartic and these movies about sex addiction are no exception. If you or someone you know is suffering or battling sex addiction, the following eight movies can be helpful resources. I saw this movie when I was a freshman in High School and I had no idea what was going on. Isn't that just the cutest thing you've ever heard? Maggie Gyllenhaal stars as Lee, a secretary to a high powered lawyer, E. Edward Grey, played by James Spader. Grey is aroused by her submissive behavior and soon they begin a sexual BDSM relationship. If you're unfamiliar with dominant and submissive relationships, Secretary might educate you more than say, Fifty Shades of Grey.

Michael Fassbender plays Brandon, a sex addict living in New York City. He hires prostitutes, masturbates daily, and watches porn. His addiction plagues his life and prevents him from maintaining serious or monogamous relationships. When his sister enters his life, he has a hard time keeping his life, and addiction, together.

Various stories comprise Lars von Trier's two part movie, Nymphomaniac. Joe, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac details her addiction and sexual encounters to Seligman, a man who saved her after she was brutally attacked. Stellan SkarsgÄrd, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, and William Dafoe round out the cast.

Thanks for Sharing follows various characters coming to terms with, or trying to find a solution to their sex addiction. Each character must live with their addiction in different ways and navigate professional and personal relationships. This movie about sex addiction might not have received much praise but it can serve as a good resource in explaining, or navigating, sex addiction.

Written, directed, and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this 2013 comedy was received well by audiences. A modern day "Don Juan", Jon Martello lives a simple life in New Jersey. He's passionate about working out, his family, and porn. Eventually, he falls for Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) but hides his love of pornography as he prefers it over sex. Don John is a must-watch for viewers who are seeking answers about sex addiction, on a more complex level.

7. Choke

Based on the book by Chuck Palahniuk, Choke follows Victor, a scammer who deliberately chokes on food at restaurants to get money from his rescuers. He is also a sex addict who seeks therapy through anonymous programs. His painful past and childhood might explain his behavior, a common occurrence in people with addictive personalities.

The ending will catch you off guard but Looking for Mr. Goodbar shows the true struggle with various characters grasps on sexuality.
