Hear Me Out: Oprah Should Not Be President
Probably NOT Oprah 2020
Oprah Should Not Be President
Hear Me Out
There, I said it. Oprah Winfrey, Queen of all the land, should not be president. Yes, some people voted for a reality TV personality to lead America. But does that mean we need to fight fire with fire? Electing another "celebrity" could create a snowball effect that may ever end. I'm sorry to bring it up but... Oprah should not be the next president...
Seth Meyers Approved
Oprah Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. de Mille Award at the 2018 Golden Globes on Sunday night. It was met with a standing ovation, applause, and inevitable social media posts that read "Winfrey 2020". Host, Seth Meyers made many jokes last night but reflected on one from a different time,
"And Oprah, while I have you, in 2011 I told some jokes about our current president at the White House Correspondents' Dinner — jokes about how he was unqualified to be president — and some have said that night convinced him to run. So if that's true, I just want to say: Oprah, you will never be president! You do not have what it takes! And Hanks! Where is Hanks? You will never be vice president! You are too mean and unrelatable. Now we just wait and see".
With Us Not Against Us
Even if we don't agree on who should be president in 2020 (or now) it's important to listen and learn from Oprah's speech at the 2018 Golden Globes,
"I want all of the girls watching here now to know, that a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say, 'me too' again"
Now, of course, the majority of people like, nay LOVE the one and only Oprah Winfrey. She is a force to be reckoned with. Television host, actress, spokesperson, mogul, whatever you want to call her, she has power. Ronald Reagan was an actor in Hollywood and Donald Trump was the face of a reality television show. So, a few celebrities have changed to political careers. But, does this need to be a trend in the way the US governs?
Politicians may not be the best people either, but ideally they've spent time in the correct places and know the appropriate avenues to conduct, politics. And as much as I am impressed by Oprah, she should probably stay out of the line of fire. Regardless of the president or your political views, they will inevitably do something that the American people will disagree with, they will make you mad or piss you off. Would you really want to get mad at Oprah?
Oprah For The People, Always
So, instead, Oprah should shine her Golden Globe, pick vegetables in Santa Barbara, fund schools in Africa for girls, make interesting and thought-provoking entertainment, write delicious cookbooks, and overall brighten our lives. She doesn't need to know how to launch a nuclear war.
