Disney casts Chinese actress, Liu Yifei to play Mulan

After searching far and wide, Disney has found their Mulan. Chinese actress, Liu Yifei has accepted the coveted role. Yifei will tell the tale of Hua Mulan, a woman who disguises herself as a man to fight for her country, as her father is too old to participate. The 1998 animated film was a hit and follows recent Disney live-action movies like Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. The news comes after Disney released the cast list for the Lion King which will star Beyoncé and Donald Glover. Mulan will be pioneered by New Zealander, Niki Caro a female director whose work includes “Whale Rider” and “The Zookeeper’s Wife”.

Who Is She?

Born “An Feng” she would later change her name to “Liu Yifei” and is lovingly known as “Fairy Sister” by fans and the Chinese media. An only child, her parents divorced when she was young, causing her to move to New York City at 10 years old. She returned back to China to begin her career as an actress and model. Classically trained on the piano, Yifei is much more than a triple threat.

Where Have I Seen Her?

Yifei has quite the resume under her belt. She has starred in various Chinese films such as Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, The Return of the Condor Heroes, and Love in Disguise. She’s dabbled in Hollywood films such as The Forbidden Kingdom with Jackie Chan and Jet Li, Outcast, and The Chinese Widow.

The casting news comes at a welcomed time. Hollywood has be guilty of “whitewashing” characters. From Scarlett Johansson in "Ghost in the Shell" to Emma Stone in "Aloha", Disney has finally found the right actress for the right part.
