Another Massacre: Gunman Kills 26 People During Sunday Church Services
Twenty-Six dead and 20 injured in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
Massacre in Texas
On Sunday, November 5th, Devin Patrick Kelley killed 26 people at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The deadliest mass shooting in Texas, the victims ranged from 18 months to 77 years old. The massacre left about 4% of the population’s town dead. Reports claim his mother-in-law and her family attend church at First Baptist but they were not there Sunday. No motive has been considered yet but many theories alluding to his distain for his in-laws.
As of Monday morning, ten people remain in critical condition, and a total of 20 people were wounded. Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt exclaimed, “I think nearly everyone had some type of injury”.
Guns & Psyche
Kelley fled the scene but was eventually shot by an armed resident who confronted the shooter outside of the church. The gunman was decked out in all black tactical gear and a ballistic vest. He turned the gun on himself and was found dead later in his vehicle.
President Donald Trump issued a statement from Japan, where he is visiting leaders, and expressed sorrow for the victims. He believes the shooting was caused by “a mental health problem” in the United States, not guns.
Kelly was dishonorably discharged from the US Air Force. He was court-martialed in 2012 for domestic assault on his wife and child. He served a year in confinement thus resulting in a “bad conduct discharge” and a rank reduction. In April of 2016, Kelley purchased a Ruger AR-556 rifle that he allegedly used in Sunday’s shooting. To purchase the rifle, there was no disqualifying information in the background check.
The victims ranged in age from babies to the elderly. Annabelle Pomeroy, 14, the daughter of the church’s pastor, died on Sunday. Her mom, Sherri Pomeroy explained, “We lost more than Belle yesterday, and the only thing that gives me a sliver of encouragement is the fact that Belle was surrounded by her church family that she loved fiercely, and vice versa”. Annabelle’s father, and the pastor of the church was out of town, but the visiting pastor was also among the dead. Eight members of one family perished Sunday as well, the relatives spanned three generations and included a woman who was five months pregnant, along with three of her children.
The gunman targeted parishioners young and old, attacking families and loved ones. This attack comes just over a month after 58 people were shot and killed in Las Vegas at a country music festival, in what was the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history. Every time a mass shooting occurs in the United States, the satirical website, The Onion, publishes an article reporting on the massacre titled, 'No Way To Prevent This', Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens.
