Maya Angelou was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years.
But underneath all her accomplishments and accolades, Maya Angelou was at her core resilient. She stayed the essence of love and light, even after facing an incredibly difficult upbringing, one that might harden even the softest of hearts.
Maya Angelou can teach us all how to rise, because what happens to us, doesn't have to define who we are. You have the power to choose how you respond to your life's struggle, you have the power to choose who you are going to be.
She can teach us all how to be a better global citizen and honor our relationships with others. And isn't that what life is mainly all about, to move past the struggle with ourselves and find meaning in the positive affect we have in our relationships with other people?
