13 "Grey's Anatomy" Characters: Then & Now
Let's see how much our favorite characters have changed!
1. Miranda Bailey
Here's Bailey, aka "The Nazi" in season one of "Grey's Anatomy." She was a total hard-ass, but her softer sides showed through when someone really needed a moment, making her one of the best characters of season 1.
Not much has changed in the way Bailey is, except she's much more "human," now we see most of her faults, but the Bailey we know and love is still the same: pushing people to do their absolute best. She's the Chief of Surgery (finally), has a husband, and her son Ben is coming up on ten years.
2. Alex Karev
When we first met Alex back in season 1, he was THE biggest asshole on planet earth. He was super arrogant and he slept around with a lot of nurses and other surgical interns.
But now, after Rebecca, and after Izzie, and after being shot, and after Christina leaving and Derek dying, Alex is at a place where we all truly love him. He's become an amazing Peds surgeon, has a great relationship with Jo, and is Meredith's person.
3. Meredith Grey
Wow. Season 1 Meredith was full of hormones and self doubt and beauty and an eagerness to learn.
She's not all that different now, but the loss of so many important people in her life (Derek, her mother, Lexie, Mark, Christina) has left her harder than she's ever been. But she's an amazing mom, and she's still trying to learn as much as possible in the surgical ward - while teaching at the same time. We love you, Mere!
4. Jackson Avery
Awww, look at that sweet, clean-cut face. Jackson burst onto the scene at Seattle Grace/Mercy West after the merger happened, and he was a little mean and cut throat.
But now he's super sweet and he and April have a baby (hopefully they can salvage their relationship) and a great surgeon who is willing to do anything to save someone's life. He's also WAY more beautiful!
5. Owen Hunt
Here's Major Owen Hunt, saving Christina from the icicle... He randomly and quite passionately kisses her, but then just walks away...
Many seasons later and he's been the Chief of Surgery, married and divorced Christina, and is now married to the one and only Amelia Shepherd. He's been the constant rock throughout "Grey's Anatomy," and someone everyone can count on.
6. Christina Yang
Our favorite robot... Ahh, season 1 saw Christina becoming Meredith's person, slowly falling in love with Burke (and becoming pregnant with his child), and fostering her love of cardio.
She's now off in Switzerland being the most badass Cardio god in the world. Thanks in part to the aforementioned Burke...
7. Izzie Stevens
Izzie started off in as the model and someone not to be taken too seriously. But she quickly became a force to be reckoned with when she showed up Alex in the locker room.
After 6 seasons, Izzie finally leaves Seattle Grace after an extremely rough life... She's survived cancer, Denny, and a briefly-sweet-but-mostly-disastrous marriage to Alex. It was time for her to leave, but it would have been nice to see a little more closure than we got.
8. Richard Webber
Chief of Surgery Richard Webber started our whole "Grey's Anatomy" experience off with his game metaphor. We all asked ourselves the question: Do we have what it takes (to watch this show without wanting to kill Shonda)?
After a bout or two of alcoholism and loosing Adele, Richard seems to finally be back on his feet. No matter what crap Richard said or got himself into, we knew that he'd make it alright again.
9. Derek Shepherd
Awwww, so cute, so baby face, so McDreamy. His McNickname (the first in a long line of McNicknames) stuck with him throughout the entire series.
It's almost too sad to look at a picture of Derek now without wanting to cry your eyes out. We will love you forever, McDreamy.
10. Mark Sloan
Ahhh, McSteamy. (Almost McHunky). Mark Sloan was such an arrogant guy when we first met him, but we gave him credit when he came to Seattle to take Addison home. He joined Meredith's "Dirty Mistresses" squad, where together they hated their lives and the Shepherds.
After Mark died, it was really hard to keep watching. His ups and downs with Lexie were so amazingly done, and the only good thing about him being dead is that he & Lexie are up in Heaven together.
11. Lexie Grey
Little Grey - hated by both Meredith and Christina at first. She was pretty annoying and it was, like, "Just leave Meredith alone already!" But we're glad she kept at it, because that relationship would turn into something so special.
When she told Mark the day before the crash that he had infected her, it was the most perfect thing ever. Lexie went out as awkward and adorable as ever, and we'll miss her until the day we all die, too.
12. April Kepner
Well, April was the most annoying new resident at Seattle Grace/Mercy West behind Reed... and maybe also Charles. But she eventually came around.
Now, April can still be whiny and annoying, but she sure has squiggled into our hearts. And the fact that she and Jackson seem to be working out their problems is great!
13. Callie Torres
Callie was all curly-haired and sassy, bossing George around and being shut out by Meredith and Izzie. But we soon came to love her when she stuck by all the hospital interns that didn't know they actually needed her.
SO SAD CALLIE LEFT. It was super sudden, but we're more glad that she and Arizona left on a good note, and that she has Sofia!
