Perhaps you remember reading the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure and *Give Yourself Goosebumps as a kid, books that allowed you to determine how the book ended. I always loved reading them and was ecstatic when I discovered there were choose your own adventure books for adults because it meant if I didn't like how a book ended, I could always go back and do it over again!
The first gamebook, the name for these interactive books, dates back all the way to 1930! It was a romance novel called Consider the Consequences! by Doris Webster and Mary Alden Hopkins and contains more than a dozen different endings. Today, adult gamebooks come in all genres: horror, mystery, erotica, romance, adventure, literary, and more! 1. Choose Your Own Misery: Dating by Mike MacDonald and Jilly Gagnon
Have you ever been on a bad date? Probably. Well, through Mike MacDonald and Jilly Gagnon's Choose Your Own Misery: Dating, you get to relive those bad date, but this time at least it's funny. Playing one of two characters, you get to pick your own heinous yet hilarious date that could involve an underground fight club or a Steve Urkel impersonator.
2. To Be or Not To Be: A Chooseable-Path Adventure by Ryan North
Ryan North brings us To Be or Not To Be, a book that thrusts you into the world of Hamlet, offering more than a 100 different endings. In one adventure, you're able to play as Hamlet and ruthlessly avenge your father's death. Another allows you to be Hamlet's father and investigate your own murder, while in a third you're Ophelia, changing the world with your scientific breakthroughs! North also wrote Romeo and/or Juliet, another choose-your-own-adventure book.
