You hate someone's Facebook posts but want to keep the peace. Will they be able to tell if you unfollow them on Facebook? Do people know if you unfollow them on Facebook?

Can People See If You Unfollow Them On Facebook?

Do people find out if you unfollow them on Facebook? Good question! Like most folks on social media, we're friends with people on Facebook that, for whatever reason, we're tired of seeing posts from. We don't feel bad about unfriending someone we haven't talked to in years, but some of these people are family and we'd rather not have to spend my Thanksgivings and Christmases hearing them complain about that time we unfriended them on social media. Unfollowing is a much easier option in a lot of situations, but it made us wonder if people are able to tell when you unfollow them on Facebook. So, does Facebook send someone an alert telling people you've unfollowed them or is it something that stays between just you and your own peace of mind? So, can people see if you unfollow them on Facebook? Do people know if you unfollow them on Facebook? Here's our investigation!

Why Unfollow Someone On Facebook?

Whether it's because you don't agree with them politically (to put in lightly in many cases) or you're simply tired of seeing 20 plus photos of their baby every single day, everyone has their reasons for wanting to unfollow certain people on Facebook. Sometimes people are much more fun in person than online and they'll never know if you don't follow their posts any longer. Sometimes it is much more serious than that and you have to protect yourself from posts, photos, and videos that are upsetting or triggering to you without wanting that person to find out you've unfriended them. There's nothing wrong with wanting to protect yourself and putting your own needs no matter what type of situation you're in.

Can People Tell If I Unfollow Them On Facebook?

Will people be able to tell if you unfollow them on Facebook? The short answer is no, they won't. If you suddenly stop liking or commenting on their posts and photos all of a sudden, they might get a little suspicious. However, short of logging onto your account and checking, they will have no way of knowing for sure if you've unfollowed them as long as you remain Facebook friends.

Facebook Wants You To Unfollow People

It turns out that Facebook actually wants you to unfollow pages and people. Weird, right? It turns out there is a very good reason for it. Adam Mosseri, a product management director for Facebook, says that Facebook is "trying to encourage people to use the [unfollow] option more" often because "it will make…experiences better and…feeds more relevant."

Makes sense! After all, Facebook is trying more and more to tailor feed to the individual, suggesting groups someone might like to join, ads of products someone might like to buy, and even friends someone might be interested in befriending. The algorithm "looks for subtle and obvious indications to know what you do and don't want seeing in your News Feed." The reason for this is pretty obvious: the more you actually like what you seen on your feed, the more time you'll spend on Facebook engaging with content, which is good for Facebook and it's advertisers, and sponsors.

Hopefully you can rest assured that if, for any reason whatsoever, you feel the need to unfollow someone's posts on Facebook, they'll never find out about it. Facebook won't send them any sort of notification. But if you want to be extra slick, make sure you occasionally visit their page and like a post or two. Just to be safe!
