Some of our favorite books began as fanfiction!
Published Fanfiction Books
Fanfiction is a huge part of pop culture, giving fans the chance to keep reliving their favorite movies, TV shows, comics, books, and more long after it's over. While there are oodles of fanfic writers, some go on to turn there are also plenty of published books that began as fanfiction.
Many fanfiction writers are incredibly talented and, even if they don't adapt fanfiction stories they once wrote into books, go on to become writers. It used to be frowned upon to admit to writing fanfiction because it wasn't considered real writing, but it's, thankfully, becoming much more mainstream.
I think it's really exciting to discover so many books that began as fanfiction are being published. In a way, it isn't all that different from giving your story a serious rewrite as long as it doesn't steal from the original source material.
Here are a few books that began as fanfiction for you to check out!
1. Point Pleasant by Jen Archer Wood
Jen Archer Wood's novel, Point Pleasant, once used to be Supernatural fanfic, but since then it's been reworked into a story with an uncanny world all its own. Point Pleasant, West Virginia was an idyllic small town to grow up, though an otherworldly encounter at a young age changed Ben Wisehart's life forever. It even put him on track for becoming a bestselling horror writer when he got older.
Ben left Point Pleasant thirteen years ago and has returned after the creature that caused all his childhood nightmares has reemerged. He and his former best friend, Nicolas Nolan, who is now sheriff, dig into the mystery of what's going on in Point Pleasant and "discover that the ghost that haunt us are sometimes made of flesh and blood. And sometimes they lead us home."
Don't miss the incredible artwork by Svetlana Shpakova that accompanies the book!
2. Wallbanger by Alice Clayton
Before a serious makeover, Wallbanger, the first novel in Alice Clayton's Cocktail Series, was Twilight fanfiction. But that was then. Now, Clayton's story is an erotic romance about a woman named Caroline Reynolds. Between a thriving design career, great friends, her cat, and a new apartment, her life is great. Well, except for one thing. She really needs to get off.
Too bad her new neighbor is having loud, wallbanging sex to the point she's actually losing sleep over it. Fed up and sexually frustrated, Caroline heads to Simon Parker's door and, well, that's when the sexual tension really begins to ramp up.
3. Rewriting the Ending by H.P. Tune
Grey's Anatomy is quite the prolific show, so much so that fanfiction based on the show have been rewritten into incredible novels! Once a Calzona fic, H.P. Tune's book, Rewriting the Ending is one such novel.
Juliet is an author on deadline with a bad case of writer's block and heading to Belgium. Unsure of exactly what she's looking for, Mia is flying anywhere away from here and chooses Scotland. Due to a shared flight itinerary, Juliet and Mia happen to meet in the airport lounge.

K.L. Hughes' novel, Popcorn Love is based on their Once Upon a Time Swanqueen fic. A busy business woman and single mother to a three year old boy, Elena Vega seems to have it all.
