Here Are the Best Tales From 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark'
We're never too old for a good scare!
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
If you're anything me, you grew up reading every scary book you could get your hands on. I loved to share the best tales from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Goosebumps books, and anything else I could get my hands on with my friends, telling them over a campfire or with a flashlight illuminating the bottom of my face for the ultimate effect. It was the best!
With the film adaptation of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark due out in August, it's more important than ever (well, maybe not important, but definitely fun!) to relive all our favorite stories from Scary Stories before seeing the movie. It's always nice to have a refresher before seeing a movie adaptation.
Here are the three books from the Scary Stories series by Alvin Schwartz. Have fun reliving your childhood!
1. High Beams
"High Beams" is a psychological adventure about a woman driving home at night. She notices a truck following behind her and, no matter how fast she seems to drive or where she turns, the truck keeps flashing its brights at her. She's terrified when she reaches her house. Then the truck driver gets out with a gun. But it turns out there was a murderer in her back seat and each time he tried to hurt her, the truck driver flashed his brights to blow his cover.
2. The Big Toe
The fact that the kid who finds the big toe sticking up from the ground immediately wants to eat it for dinner is creepier than the ghost who goes after the boy and his parents demanding his toe back. Who can blame the ghost? I'd be made if someone ate my toe too.
3. Cold as Clay
In this tale, a farmhand falls for his bosses daughter, but the farmer believes the farmhand his beneath her and sends her away. Unbeknownst to the daughter, the farmhand dies of a broken heart. The farmhand shows up at her and tells her to come home to see her father. She gives her lover a handkerchief and when they reach the farm, he disappears. Her father tells her the truth, but when they dig up the farmhand's body, they discover him clutching the handkerchief in his hand.
Made to resemble someone his creators hated, a sentient scarecrow named Harold grows weary of the awful and downright abusive treatment he gets from two men. He eventually reaches his breaking point and begins to psychologically torture them before he peels their skin from bodies and leaves it to dry out in the sun. Yikes!
5. Wonderful Sausage
The local butcher murders his wife and, to get rid of the body, grinds her into sausage and tries to sell her to the locals. When the sausage isn't as profitable as he'd hoped, he goes on a rampage, murdering people and turning them into sausage too. Eventually, the locals discover what's been going on and turn the butcher into sausage.
6. The Hook
Most people have heard the legend of the Hookman - there's a reason it's so popular! A young couple is on a date at a popular make out spot when they hear over the radio a killer has escaped prison and has a hook for a hand. Later, they open their car doors and find the bloody hook on their door handle.
7. The Red Spot
In this short tale, a woman gets bitten by a spider on her face. Over the next few days, it begins to hurt more and more until, while sitting in the bath, the bump on her face bursts and dozens of spiders come crawling out.
8. Something Was Wrong
A man finds himself walking down the street with no memory of how he ended up there. Each person he walks up to runs away screaming. When he finally makes it home, his wife is nowhere to be found, though he eventually discovers she's at his funeral.
