Why Didn't Lorde Sing At The 2018 Grammys?

The 2018 Grammys were problematic in more ways than one. Wondering why didn't Lorde sing at the Grammys this year? Why didn't she perform? Okay, listen up.

Lorde was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2018 Grammys, right? It's the biggest award of the night and her album Melodrama was fully deserving of the title -- but she wasn't scheduled to perform at all?

Suspicious, seeing as how we were forced to endure Bono and Sting and their three (each) onstage appearances, while we received ZERO onstage appearances from the only woman who was nominated for Album of the Year.

Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, and Childish Gambino were also nominated for Album of the Year, and all of the artists, except for Jay-Z, performed.

But why didn't Lorde take the stage in New York City? Why didn't Lorde sing?

According to Variety, Lorde was asked to perform with other artists in a tribute to the late Tom Petty.

The song "American Girl" was included, but Lorde thought it would be weird for her to perform as she was born in New Zealand. So, she turned the performance down.

However, according to a source, all of the male nominees were offered solo spots performing their songs.

Lorde's mother, Sonja Yelich, alluded to the snub when she tweeted the following article.

The Grammys producer, Ken Ehrlich, told Variety, "I don't know if it was a mistake. These shows are a matter of choices. We have a box and it gets full. She had a great album. There's no way we can really deal with everybody."

This is the same person who said, in regards to only 9% of the Grammy nominations going to women, those female artists need to "step up."

To quote, "It has to begin with… women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level… [They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome. I don't have personal experience of those kinds of brick walls that you face but I think it's upon us — us as an industry — to make the welcome mat very obvious, breeding opportunities for all people who want to be creative and paying it forward and creating that next generation of artists."

Not a good look, Ehrlich.

Meaning Of Lorde's Dress At 2018 Grammys

Whatever the reason as to why Lorde wasn't offered a solo performance that doesn't mean the 21-year-old singer was silent. Lorde's Grammy dress took a stand. But, what is the meaning behind Lorde's dress from the Grammys?

Who Is Jenny Holzer?

Lorde sewed the words of feminist artist Jenny Holzer into the back of her red gown. The excerpt comes from Holzer's "Inflammatory Essay."

It reads, "Rejoice! Our times are intolerable. Take courage, for the worst is a harbinger of the best. Only dire circumstance can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors. The old and corrupt must be laid to waste before the just can triumph. Contradiction will be heightened. The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom."

Lorde has yet to make an official comment on the Grammys and lack of a performance, but she did tweet a bit of shade.
