What Is Meltdown And Spectre? Apple Says Your Products May Be In Danger
Meltdown and Spectre are two major flaws in computer chips that makes hackers' jobs easier.
What is Meltdown and Spectre?
Chances are you are probably reading this on your iPhone, or maybe even your Macbook. DROP IT RIGHT NOW, IT'S INFECTED.
Sorry, that's a bit much. Let's explain.
There has been a lot of talk surrounding Apple, Meltdown, and Spectre. But, what is Meltdown and Spectre? Turns out, they are two major flaws in computer chips that allow hackers to get your data and information easier. Now, Apple has announced that it has affected all iPhones, iPads, and Macs worldwide.
How Do Meltdown and Spectre Errors Affect Me?
Apple also says that, as of yet, no customers have been actually affected.
These two bugs are inside the Apple products' processors, essentially -- the brains of our gadgets. According to researchers, Meltdown "melts security boundaries which are normally enforced by the hardware," whereas Spectre "breaks the isolation between different applications [allowing] an attacker to trick error-free programs, which follow best practices, into leaking their secrets."
What Do Meltdown and Spectre do to my iPhone?
Either one of these bugs could exploit your data -- including your passwords and probably those racy nude photos as well, not to mention those iMessages of you talking shit on all of your acquaintances.
Also, who named these exploits? The names are 🔥🔥🔥 and so correctly evocative of the issues raised by the two different but related structural issues. Spectre haunting all modern chips... The Intel meltdown... Sometimes geek poetry is real poetry. :-D— zeynep tufekci (@zeynep) January 4, 2018
How do I stop Meltdown and Spectre?
On the bright side, there are some software patches that can fix Meltdown. On the not-so-bright side, only certain exploitations of Spectre can be stopped with a patch -- and it may be haunting us for a while. The only possible solution may be new processors.
Update your phone now to protect from Meltdown and Spectre.
Make sure your phone and computer are both updated to help protect the iOS from Spectre.
In the meantime, Apple and a number of other companies are already pumping out solutions for customers so this doesn't happen with the newest software.
Google has already developed a new mitigation, called "Retpoline," that helps to keep data safe.
I don't know about you, but I feel overwhelmed. Here's a quick breakdown of what's going on.
Am I affected by Meltdown or Spectre?
Yeah, girl, you in danger. (Most likely.)
How do I know if I'm affected by Meltdown or Spectre?
You don't. You can't tell if anyone has exploited these bugs against you.
Does antivirus block Meltdown or Spectre?
It's possible, but pretty unlikely. Meltdown and Spectre aren't like other malware, which your antivirus detects and blocks, these bugs look just like regular applications.
What can Meltdown and Spectre leak?
Basically anything on your computer or phone. This includes passwords, photos, iMessages, and anything else in the memory.
These are not a thing to take lightly. That said, let's all appreciate how adorable the logo for Spectre is -- look at this menacing little ghost! What a cutie!!
What is he going to do with that stick? Beat my iPhone?! Aw...
