Growing up singing gospel, Aretha Franklin earned her title as the Queen of Soul in the 1960's with legendary hits including "Respect" and "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman," two songs you've probably tried and failed to sing at karaoke.
But Aretha is known not just for her pipes but for her passion.
She not only puts emotion into her music, but she's used her platform to speak out for civil rights and equality. She was the first woman inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, was ranked by Rolling Stone as the greatest singer of all time, and earned a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.
Aretha sings because she has something to say, and for this we have mad R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
