Will The US Be In The 2018 Winter Olympics?
United States officials have been concerned about security at the 2018 Winter Olympics, which will take place in PyeongChang, South Korea this February. The South Korean Winter Olympics take place 50 miles south of the zone that separates North and South Korea, and tensions between the US and North Korea have risen in recent weeks as Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, have been engaged in a war of words. This September, Kim said that Trump exhibited "mentally deranged behavior." Trump responded via Twitter by calling Kim "a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people." Then when North Korea, launched its ballistic missile last week, Trump proceeded to call Kim a 'sick puppy." So, will it be safe for the US to compete in South Korea? News outlets went bonkers when US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said that it was an "open question" whether the US would be sending its athletes to the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea due to the tension between the US and North Korea.
White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, later announced on Thursday that "no official decision has been made" regarding the US's participation in the 2018 Olympics. When asked if the reason was security concerns, she responded, "absolutely."

The protection of Americans is our top priority and we are engaged with the South Koreans and other partner nations to secure the venues.”
