Is HBO's new show Confederate problematic?

Game Of Thrones Creators' New Show Confederate

While we've all been excited about the final two seasons of Game of Thrones, the show's creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have been busy creating a new show called Confederate. Now, HBO has greenlit the Game of Thrones creators' new show, and fans everywhere are concerned that Confederate sounds problematic.

According to Deadline, Confederate takes place in an "alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution."

Confederate will also feature "freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate, and the families of people in their thrall."

Why Game Of Thrones Creators' New Show Confederate Could Be Problematic

According to Bustle, a show like Confederate would "require a level of progression that our nation just hasn't reached yet." And we agree. Our society isn't ready for a show like this.

Despite slavery ending over 150 years ago, it's a topic that white Americans simply refuse to talk about. And seeing as a man who is basically against anyone who isn't white, rich, or male won the presidency, it's clear that a show like this shouldn't be airing in the near future.

We're afraid that Confederate is a disaster waiting to happen. Even if it's not intentional, it's possible that slavery could be romanticized. Confederate is supposed to be an alternate universe of our own, where the southern states seceded from the union. But, the show could give false hope to individuals who are trying to keep the confederacy alive today. While those individuals see the confederate flag as a symbol of heritage. For others, the flag is very real representation of oppression, torture, and death.

So, what exactly is HBO playing at? Who do they want to tune into Confederate every week?

What do you think of Confederate so far? Will you be watching?
