Here's Why Katy Perry And Gigi Hadid Are Banned From China For The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show (VSFS) 2017?
The 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is falling apart after a series of roadblocks from the Chinese government. The VS Fashion Show, which will air on television live from Shanghai on November 28, has lost a number of models due to denied visas and now, it looks like the show will be short a performer since Katy Perry has been banned from China "indefinitely". Page Six also suggested that fan-favorite model Gigi Hadid will not be walking the VSFS 2017 due to visa issues and her viral racist video.
Why Was Katy Perry Banned From China For The VS Fashion Show 2017?
We bet you're wondering why Katy Perry was banned from China. While it would have been understandable for Perry to be banned from China due to her 'yellowface' performance at the American Music Awards in 2013, according to Page Six, Perry was banned from China after the Chinese government found out about the time Perry wore a sunflower dress and waved a Taiwanese flag during a performance in Taipei, Taiwan in 2015.
For those of you wondering, there has been tension between Taiwan and China for decades over Taiwan's independence. China believes in a "one country, two systems" formula while Taiwan seeks independence from China.
Perry's sunflower dress caused widespread outrage for the Chinese government because the sunflower was adopted by anti-China protesters and by waving the Taiwanese flag during the concert, the Chinese government took it as support for Taiwan as an independent country. Perry has now been banned from China "indefinitely".
She was initially granted a visa to perform at the VS show in Shanghai, then Chinese officials changed their minds and yanked her visa,” a source told Page Six. “For every artist who wants to perform in China, officials comb through their social-media and press reports to see if they have done anything deemed to be offensive to the country. Maroon 5 was banned a few years ago because one band member wished the Dalai Lama happy birthday on Twitter.”
Who Is Performing In The VS Fashion 2017 Now?
Since Katy Perry is now banned from China and can't make it to the VS Fashion Show on Tuesday, fans are wondering who will perform at the VS Fashion show this year? It looks like Harry Styles and Miguel will be the only ones performing at the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. That is unless the VS Fashion Show actually blesses us with a Haylor reunion with a performance from Taylor Swift as well.
