Everything You Need to Know About the Double Cleansing Method

If you told thirteen-year-old me that I could help my oily acne-prone skin with more oil then I would have scoffed and continued to destroy my skin with St. Ives' Apricot Scrub. Well, I'm telling you now that "rumors" are true. Adding an oil-based cleanser to your skincare routine as part of the double cleansing method saved my skin. And I'm never looking back. So, what is double cleansing, how do you do it, and what products can you use?

What is Double Cleansing?

Popularized in recent years by the 10-step Korean skincare routine, the double cleansing method involves washing your face with an oil-based cleanser, followed by a water-based cleanser. For all my science nerds, like dissolves like, right? So, the oil-based cleanser removes any oil-based impurities like makeup, sebum, and sunscreen. Then the water-based cleanser cleanses water-based impurities like sweat and dirt. Ultimately, this method of cleansing your skin is the perfect way to make sure that your skin is, well, clean.

Double Cleansing Steps: How to Double Cleanse

A little uncertain on how to implement this routine? Here's a breakdown on what to do:

  1. Depending on the type of oil-based cleanser you have, you can scoop or pump out the cleanser into your palm.

  2. Rub the cleanser in your hands to warm it up a bit.

  3. Massage the cleanser into your face (gently) in circular motions.

  4. Add a splash of water to your face and then massage your face again. The cleanser will turn white and milky. Don't worry! It's emulsifying.

  5. Thoroughly rinse off the oil cleanser with lukewarm water.

  6. Now, get your water-based cleanser.

  7. Massage the cleanser (again gently) in circular motions.

  8. Rise off the cleanser with lukewarm water.

Is Double Cleansing Necessary?

Honestly, no one can really tell you what to do when it comes to cleaning your skin. You can add interesting products and try out new things whenever you want.

My skin dramatically improved after implementing the double cleansing method to my oily acne-prone skin because I was actually cleaning off all the impurities from my skin before adding my skincare.

However, it took me a while to find the perfect oil-based and water-based cleansers for my skin. So, definitely give a few products a go before saying no.
