Sarah Drew on Getting FIRED From Grey's Anatomy
If you've ever wondered the real reason Sarah Drew was fired from Grey'a Anatomy, we've finally got answers!
Let's be honest, April Kepner (Sarah Drew) was never our favorite character on Grey's Anatomy. Something about the way she whined and complained constantly just never sat right with us. However, she was part of the Grey's family, so her abrupt departure at the end of season 14 made us wonder what really happened.
April has been through a lot, and I mean just about everything on Grey's. Her first child died a few minutes after birth, plus the whole failed marriage with Jackson was a disaster.
It's like she just attracts bad luck, but no one can blame her for what's ultimately out of her hands. Having her time cut short on the show might be a blessing in disguise for everyone involved. With her character gone from Grey's, at least she can't suffer any longer!
So, what we do know already is that April is gone for good. She married her ex-fiance, Matthew Taylor (Justin Bruening). We would remind you of what happened between them that caused the initial breakup, but we know you didn't forget the most iconic moment in Grey's Anatomy history. April and Matthew's wedding went great and the two sailed off into the sunset without looking back.
But what was the real reason Drew was fired from Grey's Anatomy?
April Kepner's Departure From Grey's Anatomy
April's exit from the series was very sudden and rushed. In the final episode of Grey's season 14, April quit her job and married Matthew Taylor. I guess one thing we can be grateful for is her life being spared, this affair could have been gruesome and bloody. It was very sweet of Rhimes to let her go easy, she rarely gives anyone a break.
We were sad to learn that Drew still had so much faith in Japril up until the end.
She told the magazine, "In the midst of it, I was devastated that Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April wasn’t an end game. I thought Jackson and April were meant to get back together and they were going to get married again and realize they’d been crazy and it was just going to be this long, slow burn. But after thinking about it, there’s a real sweetness to that story of April’s faith".
Same, Sarah! Same! With the loss of April, we also have to accept Japril will never be a thing again.
Why Was Sarah Drew Fired From Grey's Anatomy?
If you thought you were surprised to learn of Drew leaving Grey's Anatomy, how do you think she felt?! That's right-- she was just as surprised as the rest of us to learn that April would no longer be a part of the show.
We know Shonda Rhimes isn't afraid to boot characters that might deserve it, so what could Drew have possibly done? It turns out there were no issues with Drew, just with the size of the cast.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Drew addressed the problem.
"I was told that the show had too many characters and that they needed to downsize because they couldn’t service all of the characters effectively," Drew said. "They didn’t want any of us to be left in the background and not getting much of a story".
So after nine years, Grey's cut Drew basically because she was taking up space. Wow, Grey's Anatomy is even more ruthless than we thought!
Prior to her severance from Grey's, Drew received an Emmy nomination for B-Team. This definitely helped her recover from the loss of Grey's.
"My confidence had gotten a bit shaken in the wake of being let go," Drew said. "And the nomination after the fact made me go, ‘I don’t need to be worried about anything or have my confidence shaken.'" It's definitely hard to recover from something like that, but she definitely seems to be handling it smoothly.
If you thought it couldn't get any worse, the news was broken to Drew while she was on set. Her reaction went pretty much expected.
"It was in the afternoon and I went back to my trailer and I did my crying and called my people," Drew said. "A whole bunch of people came into my trailer to give me hugs and cry with me and tell me they were so sad I was leaving". Just like April, Drew seemed to be attracting all of the bad luck. And we can;t forget about the crying, both of them absolutely love to cry. That's one thing that definitely will not be missed.
