Ellen Pompeo Hints at Grey's Anatomy End Date – And We Are SO Not Ready

After 15 seasons, will Grey's Anatomy finally be coming to a end? Ellen Pompeo gives us the details we've been waiting for.
Is Grey's Anatomy Really Coming To A Close?

With Grey's Anatomy approaching a record-breaking fifteenth season, there's been a ton of speculation that the series might finally be coming to an end. Since 2005, we've made some great memories with the doctors and patients on Grey's, but it is true that all good things must come to an end. But how much longer does our favorite ABC drama series really have left? When will Grey's Anatomy end?
Many fans have turned to Ellen Pompeo for answers regarding the fate of Grey's, considering the show cannot go on without Meredith-- it wouldn't be right! Recently, Shonda Rhimes and Pompeo have been dropping hints that the show might be coming to a close following its fifteenth season. We've taken a closer look at some of these statements to determine what's really going on.

What Ellen Pompeo Has To Say About Grey's Anatomy Ending
It's been a long time coming that we hear from Pompeo on the future of Grey's Anatomy.
"Yes, we're starting to think about how you would end a show this iconic," Pompeo told Entertainment Tonight back in May during an interview.
Grey's can really only go on as long as Pompeo allows it to, so the ball is just as much in her court as it is the creators'. Talk about a girl boss!

It's hard not to wonder how something as grand as Grey's Anatomy might come to a close.
"How do you end it? But we're not there yet," Pompeo reminds us not to worry. "We're going to focus on season 15. We just take it one season at a time."
Since the premiere of season 15 is right around the corner, we think it's fair to revist the topic (and so does Pompeo).
Entertainment Weekly recently shared a statement from Pompeo regarding the future of Grey's Anatomy.
"I'm clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell," Pompeo said.
She's not wrong, continuing the show past fourteen seasons might be a bit of overkill. In addition to the obvious, it seems like Pompeo also is looking toward a new direction for her personal career.
"It's about time that I mix it up. I'm definitely looking for a change," Pompeo said.
While we're obviously heartbroken over this news, we're torn. Who can blame her?

Although Pompeo is clearly considering cutting ties with the show, she reminds us of the place that Grey's holds in her heart.
"I still am fighting every day for the quality of the show to be good and for the actors to be happy," Pompeo adds. "I still care very much about the show."
It's hard to imagine a world without new Grey's episodes to look forward too, but we always want the best for our beloved actors and actresses. Plus, there's always old episodes for us to binge watch (as if we haven't enjoyed the past ten times watching it fully through).

Don't forget to tune in to the two-hour season 15 premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 8/7c on ABC.
